Dragon Quest IV, V, VI, and IX are all on DS and are perfect for tons of grinding.
Yes those would be the best bet. I should have also mentioned Monster Hunter. That series is absolutely built upon grinding as its core concept.

So yeah, OP, you wanna grind mindlessly... Dragon Quest or Monster Hunter are 100% perfect for that.

Disgaea. This series is easily the biggest grindfest on the face of this planet. The level cap is 9999 AND you can reincarnate back to level 1 with a percentage of your stats intact. When you start getting into the postgame the stats become absolutely absurd. On top of that you can actually level grind your weapons and armor as well and once they become obsolete you can use them to upgrade your new equipment.

I wouldn't say it's particularly forgiving but it's not soul crushing either. You just need a lot of patience. If you want a game with lots of grinding it's this one. If you think you have a game grindier than this one then you are wrong. NO. YOU ARE WRONG.

Disgaea aside anything by Nippon Icchi will work. All of their games are like this, they just have different mechanics depending on the series.

Just Cause 2.

Must blow up every water tower. Water towers are the symbol of the oppressor!

That or Saboteur. Equally good for mindless "tidy up all the white dots" business.

Pretty much Monster Hunter and its clones. Sometimes you have to grind a level over and over just to get good drops and build up your new armour piece/weapon.
They usually provide 80+ hours of gameplay.

Well I was about to suggest the first two Dead Rising games which easily satisfy the criteria of "Fucking tedious grindfests" (I may be biased after slogging through them with friends) but then I noticed the "Forgiving gameplay" caveat. So! I would suggest Mercenaries mode on Resident Evil 4 & 5 : mindless, enjoyable and easy to get to grips with.

Demon's Souls is grindy and it can be particularly frustrating since XP isn't permanently allotted to your character but rather you have to use it to purchase a level-up in the game's main hub. Die before you return to the Nexus (without reaching your murder spot) and your souls/XP is gone for good. So not only is it grindy, sometimes the grinding accomplishes nothing!

Hah. If you have a PS1 or Ps2 or whatever that can play PS1 games you should try Legend of Legaia. Great story,RPG and INCREDIBLY grindy. You'd love it.
I remember what was particularly grindy about Legend of Legaia was that you had to level up both your characters and your characters' monsters (each could easily have at least half a dozen).

Dragon quest 9 is pretty good, not sure if grindy but it's worth playing
Oh it's most certainly a grind. That's not to say it's a bad thing, grinding can be fun, but regardless of how much fun it might be, DQIX has a lot of it.

Aside from just levelling up your guys, you also have to grind for alchemy ingredients, grind to level up your Grotto Bosses, you even have to grind to complete certain quests.

The game is lots of fun but you can easily spend a whole 2 hour session just out on the field killing things hoping to get one level under your belt.

Until you learn about Metal Slimes.
Metals in Quarentomb, Medleys in Bad Cave, Liquids in Bowhole. King Metal Slime in high ranked Grottoes.

OT: You could play the Third Age. Rather than traditional exp grinding, it's more skill grinding. Of course, the game is pretty much impossible to lose as soon as the Elf learns the buff that automatically revives anyone that falls.

Don't Starve is a grindy little indie title, though easy isn't the word it brings to mind.

Starbound offers quite a bit of grind. Mine resources. Build equipment. Mine slightly better resources. Build slightly better equipment. Rinse and repeat. Most of the enemies are more annoying than genuinely dangerous.

Resonance of Fate if you can stand the story being just half-baked window dressing and there being almost too much anime style weirdness.

Seriously, that is the most grindy game I have ever played. At least Kingdoms of Amalur bothered to give you quests for the grinding.

If there is anything positive that I can say about that game, it's that I love the battle system.
