If you can stand really old games and their technicall limitations i suggest learning to use DOSBOX and playing Daggerfall xP. If you can get passed the graphics teh games kinda fun.

Empire Total War seems like it could be fun but I'm having trouble getting the hang of it.... Medieval 2: Total War is AWESOME. Left 4 Dead 2 is fun.

just cause 2 had massive replay value for me, so i'd go with that
if you're more into multiplayer, go with CS: source, or Team Fortress 2

basically, anything orange and box-shaped is great

Painkiller. It's a fun little fps, and has a gun that shoots shuriken and lightning. In fact, not even normal shuriken. If you get an upgrade, they even explode.
Oh yes, Painkiller.

Awesome competitive game too ... the 2005 CPL World Tour was (AFAIK) the gaming tournament with the highest prize pool ever.
The finals match was amazing ... if you can find footage of it.

Although, if you calculate prize pool per unit time, the Global Starcraft 2 League (GSL) probably wins there.

Well, League of Legends is free, has a community here on 'scapist, and is my (and many of my friends') favorite game of the moment.

Can't hurt to try it, right?

Are you into classic PC Games? I suggest taking a look at

http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/

Tons of great classics such as PlaneScape Torment , the original Fallouts, Total Annihilation. Most of them are under ten dollars too.

You a fan of Morrowind and Oblivion? Excited about the upcoming Skyrim but thought Oblivion and Morrowind were too easy? Why not try seeing where the series originated. Daggerfall, the second in the series is available as a free download.

http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN

It comes with Dos Box already set up so all you have to do is unzip it and install it.

Also if you're looking for a good flash game to play I'd suggest Rebuild.

It's a strategy game where you have to reclaim a city after a zombie outbreak. It's a lot of fun and has a lot of good ideas and concepts that could easily be made into a AAA quality game.

A pretty decent, cheap PC game would be Evil Genius or even The Movies. You can get either on Amazon for under $10 each.

Battlefield Bad Company 2. The multi-player will keep you ammused for a while.

Or something like fallout 3/new vegas.
