Hmmm... I know this may seem like a dumb question, but have you tried any of the old school Final Fantasies? If you like turned-based combat then I think you should try the original FF Tactics for the Playstation (that is if you have a PS or PS2)
nope, havent tried any FFs, come to think of it, the only jrpg ive ever played was pokemon i think. so yea, i might go see if jrpgs suit my taste ;/

Persona 4 is the best RPG I've ever played. It'll definitely keep you busy. Story is great, characters are all lovable, battles are fun and challenging and the fusion system is deep. I really can't recommend this game enough. It's a near perfect experience.
one question though, do i have to have played the previous 3 to be able to enjoy it fully? cos thats one of the reasons i havent really touched jrpgs like ff and persona, because it seems like im way behind time in the series

No, they're not connected. If you start playing Persona and like it, you should start playing other SMT games. The entire series is great.

Persona 4 has a stand alone story. All the Persona games do (barring Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment but those are both Persona 2 split up into two games). They'll allude to something that happened in a previous game but it's not nearly enough to keep you from enjoying the game and is more an attempt at fan service if anything. You can play it with no worries.

Would not recommend Borderlands as an RPG. Co-op shooter, sure. RPG no.

I'd recommend Fallout 2, but the interface very much shows its age. If you have a problem with older games, you won't enjoy it.

It's old, but not that old. Bioware's original Neverwinter Nights might entertain you.

I didn't enjoy it (too hard, so sue me), but many people have good things to say about Demons Souls. Might be worth a shot if you can get a good price.

Tales of Vesperia. It's a jrpg in the truest sense but it is freaking awesome. The combat is real time, you can fly a dragon, sail a boat, gamble, amongst other things. There is a massive and gorgeous overworld map to explore. No random encounters either. The game is a true gem and it is hard to find. Hell it still goes for 45 dollars used it is so hard to get a hold of. Any rpg fan owes it to themselves to play it.
You know what pissed me off about Vesperia? The achivements. "Haha, you didn't do this random thing we didn't even hint at being able to do in a boss battle, so you don't get an achievement".

Other than that, a pretty fun game, good combat (like all tales games), but suffers from your traditional JRPG woes.

If you have a playstation and can find it, Breath of Fire 3. I don't care if you're looking for something more recent, I believe it to be the GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME! Of course, that's partly due to a healthy dose of nostalgia, but why would I care about that? The Breath of Fire games are all stand alone as well.

But on a more reasonable note, I recommend Persona 3, largely because if you play Persona 4 first you may not be able to appreciate the previous game fully.

Resonance of Fate!

It's technically a JRPG, but it's very different from any JRPG I've played.

Amazing characters, interesting story, challenging gameplay that involves guns as weapons, though it's not a shooter. You'd have to look up gameplay to get that, because it's kind of hard to explain. xD

good RPGs?
I'd imagine in the old-school sense System Shock 2, Deus Ex, and KOTOR
Whereas with the newer stuff I always figured the 2 Mass Effects to be pretty badass
you could also try Okami for the PS2 or Wii, which I thought was pretty sweet since you felt like you were in a painting. It does follow some legend of Zelda tropes however.

but interesting games overall for recommendation?
from what i've seen playing games like the Condemned Criminal Origins games, which are mind-f*&^s written on a disk, or certain games by Suda51 (Killer7, No more Heroes, and No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle) which carry a WTF equivalent of washing down a mouthful of peyote buds and magic mushrooms with a bucket of absinthe whilst watching Lucha-Libre wrestling.
not sure if these games are "good", but by god you will remember it after playing it

If you've got a PS2/3, try out Champions of Norrath and/or the sequel, Champions: Return to Arms.

It's set in the Everquest universe and plays like Baulders Gate. Once you finish Norrath, you can import your character into Return to Arms and continue its growth with new items and skills. It also has 4 player same screen action, and is still playable online via PS3.

If you're looking for something for PC, the Dungeon Siege series was pretty enjoyable.

If you have a DS try to find a copy of Chrono Trigger ($20 USD). If you live in the US there should be some being sold at those old K-Mart supermarkets. Or if you like emulation, you could download it for the SNES emulator just about anywhere on the web.
