The correct answer is, of course, Azumanga Daioh. Funniest show I've ever seen. Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou (usually translated into English as His and Her Circumstances) is also pretty good at first, although it goes downhill after about episode 13.

Edit: I should add, though, that the humor in the above two shows is somewhat different than that of Excel Saga, so it may or may not be your cup of tea. You should give the above two shows at least a couple episodes, though (if I recall correctly, the first episode of both is a little bit weaker than the following episodes).

For my money you can't go wrong with Lupin III or Urusai Yatsura.

However if you aren't so keen on classic series I can also reccomend Neia_7 and Magical Shopping Arcade Abinobashi.

Neither of those are strict comedies as there are strong dramatic elements, but they're delivered under some pretty silly and outlandish premises.

Gintama is awesome, but it's been running so long that some of it can get a bit tiresome.

Anyways there's a lot of your usual suspects, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, Azumanga Daioh, etc. But My top hidden gem that no one seems to know about would have to be: Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu (The Jungle was Always nice, then came Guu). One of those ones where the first episode leaves you scratching your head in part because of it's childish appearance, but just keep watching and it gets down right hilarious. Don't know what the common consensus would be but to me while different it's equal in value to Azumanga Daioh

I will be the first to tell you that I have zero interest and taste in comedy anime, but I've been liking SNAFU [http://www.crunchyroll.com/my-teen-romantic-comedy-snafu] for a while. There's a good breadth of subtle and outright comedy.

Cromartie High School. It must bee seen to be believed. Also one of the best dubs in the business. And Freddy Mercury back from the grave. He didn't really die.... he just ended up in some Japanese high school.

Welp, I just got back from work, and this is the first time I've checked this thread since I posted it. And we have a winner.

I've seen this clip before, but I completely forgot about it. That is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Nichijou it is.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Hetalia: Axis Powers yet. It's a historical comedy where the humour is based almost entirely off of national stereotypes. That description probably doesn't do it justice so watch a few episodes. each episode is really short so you'll know if you like it pretty quickly.

Rosario + Vampire will be my recommendation. Not necessarily the entire series, whilst I did find it amusing, but for this one scene in episode 1 of Capu 2 (the 2nd season) where a face of a screaming cat comes out of nowhere to be a jump scare, after a poor excuse for a tension building scene. The randomness, combined with the hilarious hissing sound the cat makes made me literally cry with laughter for about 5 minutes (made even funnier when constantly repeated). Seriously the salt in my tears made my eyes hurt.

There's a lot of awesome recommendations here, but I can't believe that no-one's mentioned Irresponsible Captain Tylor yet.
Not only is it hilarious, it has *the* most awesome space battle *ever*.

One of the funniest animes I have seen was the dub of Ghost Stories. The anime is a pretty mediocre one with a really mediocre script but the English dubbing company threw the script out and made a new one. It is great.

I would recommend an older comedy anime: Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi, though I admit it's very long and doesn't really go anywhere.

Hataraku Maou-sama is the best comedy series right now.
I am soooo looking forward to Seinto Oni-san.
Actually, I am going to go to a manga cafe tomorrow just to read the manga version of it in one sitting.

Somewhat suprised nobody's mentioned this, Hayate no Gotoku. If you can catch references to other animes, and are a little willing to laugh at yourself, Hayate no Gotoku delivers. and it delivers well.

Hayate no Gotoku is funny and there's quite a lot of episodes out too.

I remember Clannad being particularly hilarious at points when it isn't driving a stake into your heart.

Seitokai no Ichizon is also really funny, and you'll know within like a minute of it starting whether you're going to like it or not.

Is this a Zombie? is also really funny, and both sub and dub are good.
