Hello Escapists,

As with the release of the Hobbit, my interest in Fantasy and War movies has been bought back to life. Now until I go to the cinema to watch it I was wondering if any of you had some good Fantasy, War or Historical films you've watched and would like to recommend.

Just a quick FYI, I've watched the LOTR Trilogy, The Pirates of the Caribbean all, Star Wars all so I've seen these popular ones. Also for War/Historical I mean movies like Kingdom of Heaven or Valkyrie.

Thank you very much.

Troy?

Not exactly a classic, but it's got ample battle scenes, and at least has pretensions of historical accuracy. Well, I think it does anyway, I'm not too clued up on Greek history or mythology, although I'm sure plenty on here are.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

A frankly spiffing naval flick that really doesn't get attention.

as for fantasy i am very biased towards "Legend"
One of the earlier movies with Tom Cruise (made by Ridley Scott) also suggest to find the directers cut (it is around 20 minutes longer then the theatrical release)

Letters from Iwo Jima is a damn good historical movie. I guess you could call it a war movie, but it sure as hell isn't a fun war movie...

You're kidding right?! I don't think the Legend of Troy has much pretension of historical accuracy at all, pretty much. Given the second sentence of the above, eh... never mind. Put it under fantasy-cum-historical... ¬_¬ (However, historicity of the Trojan War is still debated...)

Anyway, for swords n sandals stuff... ehm... the classic Ben Hur... the chariot race alone is worth it. That and the 300 Spartans (not to be confused with the recent shite 300). Some bits of Alexander are pretty good (mainly the 'battle of Gaugamela' scene).

Warfilms wise... A Bridge Too Far, based on one of my favourite books, the Longest Day, same author, Tora! Tora! Tora!, no real need to say anything about that... and for the shits and giggles Kelly's Heroes.

Damn no sci-fi... I guess I can't say STALKER then...

For fantasy i'd say any LOTR film... but you've already seen that so... damn I can't think of any... Timeline?

For war i'd say the bridge, the young lions, catch 22, black hawk down, or Gods and Generals.

For historical i'd say Gods and Generals or Master and Commander.

Yeah, like I said, I know little of Greek history - outside of it's capacity to inspire large scale war films it doesn't really interest me I'm afraid - apologies if my ignorance in this field upsets you, but the fella asked for Fantasy, War or Historical films, and I figured Troy could cover two or maybe three of those criteria, being a film with a lot of war, based on a tale that may be historical or mythological.

The only saving grace of Timeline is that the battles are acted out/played by medieval reenactors. The rest of the movie is just a pain to watch.

Seen it and loved it. As for the debate on whether it's real or not, I actually thought it happened. Not so flashy mind you with the Horse but the battle did happen.

Yeah... I know, but it was the only medieval film that popped into my head by name.

Gah! Don't remind me of that film!

I loved reading the book back in middle school, and while I wouldn't call it high literature by any means, I'd still recommend it. I know it's not a film, but Michael Crichton certainly knew how to write page turners.

I'll second this... It's an amazing film. Very well done on all aspects.

I'll throw in one of my favourite movies here. The Odd Angry Shot. It is by no means a masterpiece, or an epic, or even worthy of a second viewing for a lot of people. But it's still one of my favourites. It's an Australian film made in 1979 following an SASR section in Vietnam. They're a bunch of larrikins, and in true Aussie spirit try to make the most of a bad situation through humour. It is a comedy at its heart, but it is still a war film and as such, there are the emotion killing scenes too.

It may be incredibly difficult to find though. It's hard enough to find in Australia.

Battle Of Stalingrad, a really upbeat/turn-around movie about the battle for Stalingrad in WWII. Great to watch on Christmas.

Enemy at the Gate. An excellent WWII film about Vasily Zaytsev, a famous Russian sniper based in Stalingrad.

Yeah sorry about that... kinda acknowledged that halfway through the paragraph I posted (not very well, mind)... didn't bother changing what I'd written before... -_-

PSS as were on the subject of war films watch Where Eagles Dare. tis the main film that inspired Tarantino to make Inglorious Bastards and contains enough raw testosterone (in the shape of both Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton) to make men cheer and women come over all flushed...

PSS Das Boot: simply one of the finest war films ever made. however its at the completely opposite end of scale from the large scale battles and suchlike you might like from fantasy movies.
Both choices seconded... the first because Clint Eastwood probably has a higher kill count than spoken word count in that film... -_- And the second because... well, it's achingly good... depressing as hell, but tells a very... human story, I guess... *shrug*

Eh... as a film: good. As a historical film: kinda shite... though to be fair, my criticisms of that film tend to be rather petty. :/
