Hmm, the problem I have is that films with monsters in just aren't that scary on the whole;

The Thing (I know it's been mentioned but it's great, make sure it's the 1982 version)
Mothman Prophecies
The Others
Let Me In
The Orphanage
Pan's Labyrinth
Drag me to Hell
Pet Sematary
The Fly
Zombie Flesh Eaters/Zombi 2 (make sure it's the uncensored version)
Jaws
The Mist

Some different flavours there, all decent IMHO.
How in the fuck is Pan's Labyrinth a horror movie?

Aye,

The Thing (1982) - NOT the reboot/remake/prequel sequel/shitty crappy stupid one.
May (2002)
Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Alien (1979) - watching Prometheus made me realize how uniquely good the original is.

- Event Horizon. Space horror with a nice dose of creepy mindfuckery and a rather unconventional antagonist (if one can call it that).
The first time I watched this movie after a social event involving lots of absinthe.

The nightmares this combination gave me made me wake up believing I was raving mad. Slow burner, heavy hitter methinks.

As for Silent Hill - resounding meh. The emotions I had while playing the first game for the first time were much more impressive than what I experienced watching that movie. The game just came out of nowhere and had us spooked and gasping at every n-th corner. I'm glad the movie isn't total Bollcrap, but it's still not what Silent Hill deserves.

I'll second The Shining and am disgusted that it's only been mentioned once so far.

The Orphanage/El Orfanato - it's got a couple of jump scares to keep the plebs' attention but the rest is supernatural tension-building and descent into distraction and madness. The final reveal is soul destroying.

Captcha: yes, sir
Yes sir!

For those of you who enjoyed Event Horizon, another great horror film with Sam Neill is "In The Mouth of Madness". Also it's by John Carpenter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Mouth_of_Madness

It's got both fascists and socialists in it.
Love it!

Seriously though, even the creator seems to think it's one;

Despite the success and confidence that he's brought to the Spanish Civil War segments of Pan's Labyrinth, there's little risk of Del Toro ever turning his back on the horror genre. "I'm not saying 'never', because it's always a dangerous thing to say, but right at this moment, I can't see myself ever making a film with no genre or fantasy elements.
Source [http://www.film4.com/features/article/guillermo-del-toro-on-pans-labyrinth] (beware spoilers)

The film is quite horrific, Del Toro has a history of horror films behind him, why is Pan's Labyrinth different? Is it because it doesn't rely on a lot of horror clichés? Bit hard to debate here though, I don't want to give too much away to anyone who hasn't seen it.

There's a French film called Dante 01 who's flavour really reminded me of Alien/Event Horizon too.

On the more "artsy" spectrum, we have David Lynch's first film Eraserhead. While not "scary" in the strictest sense of the term, it's an absolute experience that everyone should see.
Quite simply the best headfuck you can get.

Also worth a look. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imprint_(Masters_of_Horror) Combination of astoundingly bad acting from one of the hills have eyes mutants, and Takashi miike doing what he does best.

Aye. While I don't fancy some of the more two-dimensional bits and pieces and characters in it, I think it's a valid effort and a reasonably good movie.

I actually like the two very different forms of violence and horror served in this one. Beats the Freddy Kruegers/Mike Myers and their army of clones in the media world, the only thing I don't like about the movie is how lopsided its description of the political state of the world was at a very specific point in time. So, yes, even I remember one half of its reality far more vividly than the other, and that other, neglected and oft-forgotten half of the story always hits me straight in the face and makes me feel uncomfortable and physically sick.

As a horror movie, it's a double cream, double whopper, double whammy gut punch. Some of the visuals are unique and superb.

The Ruins
Poltergeist
Amityville Horror (original)
The Others
The Innocents
The Innkeepers
Jacob's Ladder
Cloverfield (not a horror but you did list Jurassic Park)

I recommend some 70's horror movies. i found a lot of the movies that started today's trend to be far better at it. Most horror movies today are just uncreative repeats with little effort put in.

Hell try the first Nightmare on Elm Street or Amityville Horror, they are way better than the newest cashcow-remakes that have come out recently.

The Cabin in the Woods.

It's pretty much the only horror movie I enjoy. And I enjoy the living shit out of it. It's not too scary, though. (Then again, I personally have never been scared by a movie.)
