Lately i have been playing Final Fantasy The 4 Heroes of light for the nintendo ds and i would realy recomend it, it is a turn based JRPG, Witha an interesting class system, and don't let the cuteness of the game scare You, for it is hard as Hell, in the first half of the game the party is always spreading, and sometimes you can only use one character, meaning you can't rely on a fixed party, and the enemies change level with you, it also has a limited inventory meaning you have to manage it carefully.

Plus, there is an item in the game that let's you turn your whole party into animals.

Ignoring the fact that difficulty in a turn-based JRPG is a fairly abstract concept, most of the games posted so far (like, Nocturne, Etrian Odyssey etc.) aren't actually very hard. They just demand a little bit of patience from the player.

You want a genuinely tricky turn-based RPG? I recommend the older Wizardry games. A game in which levelling up decreases your stats and certain powerful spells will knock your mages down a whole experience level.

I'm sure they've already been recommended... but, what the hey. The Shin Megami Tensei franchise (particularly, Nocturne and Persona 4).

Alternatively, i'm a huge fan of the Paper Mario series. They're some of the funniest RPG's I've ever played.

I am going to put my hat in for Arc Rise Fantasia (that is, if you have a Wii) OR The Last Remnant on PC.

I don't know how skilled you are at such games but Arc Rise Fantasia may provide a challenge as its one of 'those' games in which you cannot power through certain bosses and pretty much have to use elaborate and hair splitting strategies. Seriously, the last boss battle in this game can last up to an hour or more, and every form is dangerous and even more dangerous than the last form. The optional bosses are absurdly powerful and on my first playthrough I skipped them because I thought I was suppose to come back later or something. This is the kind of game that requires you to use the 'Defend' option quite a bit during boss fights along with cheesy strategies just to survive. In fact some bosses are so absurdly powerful I thought they were cut scene bosses, imagine my surprise when I was instantly killed by one and got a gamer over screen. General combat though is pretty simple, but fun because you can show off your fancy moves.

The Last Remnant is one of those kinds of games that is 'challenging as you want it to be' kind of games. You can either stay low leveled and plow through the enemies or grind a lot for a deeper challenge. There is also tons of optional bosses that are really powerful and require the utmost strategic cheese just to BARELY survive. General Combat can be fun too and challenging as you have to adopt optimal strategies. In this game though you get full HP after every battle but can heal during battle.
