I don't know if you'll find this scary, but I thought "The Shining", by Stephen King was pretty damn chilling. "Misery", too.

Dead Set, Somewhat more on the comedic side but also exteamly gorey.

Also, you can't go wrong with Romero's original "..... Of The Dead." Series.

If you don't mind reading subtitles try watching the Chinese version (not the American version) of 'The Eye'. I've been able to watch 'Nightmare on Elm Street' and 'The Exorcist' without being scared and was to bored with 'The Omen' to finish it, but I only got fifteen minutes into 'The Eye' before I had to turn it off and wait for daylight to be able to watch it. I still get chills when I think about certain scenes to this day (a good four or five years since I've seen the movie). The Japanese version of 'The ring' (Ringu) was a lot creepier/scarier than the American version if you want to check that out.
'30 days of night' and 'The others' are also really good movies that focus more on the psychological aspect of horror rather than the shock/gore factor.

Ginger Snaps and The Orphanage (in Spanish, not to be confused with The Orphan) are both very good scary stories, albeit less horrific and more feminine in design.

'A Clockwork Orange' is a very unsettling movie. Haven't read the book, so can't comment on it.

Of all of Lovecrafts stories "The Music of Erich Zann" had the best effect on me, although its possible I was just in the right mood at the time. You can find it at http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/themusicoferichzann.htm
As far as horror films go, I think my favorite right now is Videodrome. Long live the new flesh!

I've been looking for something similar as well. I specialize in running creepy RPG's and enjoy creepy inspiration. Silent Hill the movie was pretty good in my opinion.
Also 1408, The Mist, Event Horizon, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Rose Red, and Pandorum are good.

As far as authors go, check out King, Lovecraft, and Straub. That's all I can think of right now.

Dark Water, but it has to be the original Japanese version. The same with The Ring. The westernised versions just don't have the cold terror feeling that the originals have.

Book wise, the only one that has actually bothered me was The Mist from Stepehen King's short story anthology Skeleton Crew. Much scarier than the film and better too (although the B&W version on the Blu Ray extras is how it should have looked and is much better by far - although still not as good as the book).

Midnight Meat Train.

No, it's not a gay porno.
i always thought that'd be a great name for a porno, haha. I loved the movie, but I wasn't too fond of the ending.

OT: I didn't see the Decent mentioned, so I'll go with that. If you have any sort of clautrophobia or are afraid of the dark, this movie will be great for you.
