I'ev never played a hunting game before, and though there are a lot of budget titles out there, they appear to be mostly crap. Can you recommend me a decent one? Preferably one which has tracking and scent and lots of huge guns. Basically I want a game that lets me track and shoot an elephant in the face.

So does anyone know of any good ones?

NB I understand that killing endangered animals in videogames is not every body's cup of tea, and that is fine. But I would at least like to try it out first. I'm sure killing a videogame elk won't weigh on my conscience.

There doesn't seem to be any good one released recently, there's the Cabellas Dangerous Hunt games but they were apparently terrible.

You could always try any local arcades (if there is any), one close to me had a hunting game that looked decent.

Carnivores. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivores_%28video_game%29]

Only the hardest, meanest men dare play such a game. YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!

Red Dead Redemption, it may not be an in depth hunting game. But there is plenty an animal to be killed, skinned, and used for ammo in the Zombie expansion. Plus, Red Dead Redemption is fucking amazing.
Forgot about RDR and that you could hunt animals, the Undead Nightmare DLC lets you hunt mythical creatures like bigfoot does it not as well. Definitely the best hunting I can think of for this gen.

Unfortunately, my computer doesn't have the processing power for any especially new AAA games. Killing deathclaws in Fallout: New Vegas is fun, but I want something with a real world setting.

Ah, I remember the demo. God damn Velociraptors take about a million pistol rounds to kill, and they move 100 miles an hour.

Go out, buy a gun, get your hunter's safety, and go hunting for real.

Seriously, it's so much better than any hunting game out there. Plus you get to eat what you kill, you spend some time outdoors, you get some exercise, and you get to shoot.

Plus hunting games in general are typically mediocre at best. Although playing Deer Hunter at bars can be quite the good time...

Check out the Hunter, an active indie game that build up a really well made realistic nature scene where you go hunting.

Altho be prepared of many long moments of tracking and waiting for a good shot that can all crumble to nothing if you screw up, like real hunting :p

Monster Hunter? Maybe not exactly what your after (there is tracking but it's not very deep, for instance, it's also a JRPG, and fun) but if you can deal with shooting/slicing up dinosaurs and dragons instead of real life wild-life try that out.

Unfortunately, I live in the UK, where firearms and hunting are largely restricted. The only gun I'd have access to (at some expense) is a double-barreled shotgun, and the only prey is likely to be rabbits. I'm not going to spend that much money on what would be a casual dalliance. Besides, I don't know if I could bring myself to shoot an animal for real.

Thanks for the suggestion. Will do. Are there any fees?

Cabellas was pretty good i found as a hunting game. I would even say its probably the best hunting games out there. In saying that, i think Cabella's hunting games are really the only ones out there

Now that I've tried it, The Hunter was actually fairly good. The tracking was a bit pants ("tracks" would consist of just 4 hoof prints pointing in a random direction. There were no trails to plausibly follow), but eventually finding and successfully ambushing a deer is very satisfying.

If only they did a Safari version too.

I tried The hunter, and it's quite good. I liked it, even though I didn't spot any deer, it all just was so nice walking around I didn't even care for the hunting bit.

Yeah, it feels kind of like Oblivion in that respect: the gorgeous outdoor locales are very impressive for a free game.
