Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could please recommend a new anime for me. I would say Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is my favourite anime. I also really liked Death Note and Trigun. I really enjoyed Psycho Pass but the ending didn't really pan out for me.

I am not into shows that go on for hundreds or thousands of episodes, just something that has a good plot and each episode is generally working towards the central story.

I hate to admit it but I personally didn't get on with Cowboy Bebop. I think this is because the central story only really took place in about 5 episodes so the rest felt like filler to me.

Thanks

New as in new to you or new as in "this or last season"? Because if the former...

Baccano: Very fun, very interesting, but you have to be willing to pay attention and piece things together because the show jumps between time, places, and characters, so you're in large part piecing together what led up to some of the scenes shown in the first episode.

Mushishi: Don't let the trailers fool you, this is a fairly mellow anime. The best way I can think to put it is a series of "Just so" stories tied together by their focus on supernatural creatures called "Mushi" and a wandering "Mushi Master/Mushishi" (which is to say, someone knowledgeable about Mushi and how to deal with them) named Ginko. You aren't going to get epic or particularly tense confrontations out of this, but I find it worth watching for the creativity behind the Mushi and its appreciation for both the wonder of the world around us and simple joys we take for granted. For anyone interested, FUNimation has the series available on youtube.

I second Baccano, its basically if Tarantino made a miniseries set in the prohibition era and it was turned into an anime.

Also Reccomend Ping Pong the animation, the art style is a bit weird but it tells the tale of talent vs hardwork. All of the characters including rivals have depth to them that not only makes them 3 dimensional but gives them personal character arcs hell by the second half of the series they pretty much change. Also keep in mind this is an 11 episode series so it makes what I said about the series even more impressive.

I've been watching Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water and I generally recommend it. It's made by the same guy who did Evangelion and for a fantasy adventure that's loosely based on 20000 Leagues Under the Sea and inspired Laputa: Castle in the Sky, it's really good. However there's one big problem with the series and that's the Island/Africa arcs. The studio extended the series' episode length even though Hideaki Anno was against it and as a result, Anno took a short break from production and would come back for the last few episodes while the studio continued on and the quality really shows. Nothing happens plot wise in the arc, it's pretty much filler (apart from 2 episodes), the animation takes a dip and some characters become unbearable. So my recommendation is avoid the arc like the plague, you won't miss anything important by doing so. My advice is to watch episodes 1-22, skip episodes 23-29, watch episodes 30-31, skip episodes 32-34 and watch episodes 35-39. Trust me you will thank me for it, because apart from that arc, the series overall is really good.

And while I'm at it, I'll mention Hunter X Hunter 2011, even though it's 148 episodes, I highly recommend you give it a try, if you like FMAB, you will like HxH as well, it's one of the best shonen anime I've ever seen. Trust me.

If you're willing to put up with its 110 episodes (that has less filler crammed in it then your typical 22-26 episode series oddly enough) length, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is your high culture anime to end all anime. There's a reason why it beats out even Evangelion as the series that anime snobs always have on their top 5 best anime of all time, as it's an incredibly well handled adaptation of a light novel series that set the standard for the discussion of concepts and ideologies that no other light novel or anime has managed to meet.

Code Geass is a fun anime that's basically gundam meets death note.

If you can find it, the Street Fighter II V series was pretty good: it made some significant changes by making Ken, Ryu and Chun-Li into teenagers and the plot at large is kicked off by Guile knocking like ten shades of shit out of both Ryu and Ken in a bar fight.

Some characters do get short changed, and it isn't as good as Street Fighter II: the Animated Movie (dat Chun-Li vs. Vega fight....) but its still rather watchable in both Japanese and English.

If you liked fullmetal alchemist, you'll probably like hunter x hunter 2011.
You just have to get past the fact that it's 148 episodes and that it needs some time to get going but it's a classic for a reason and even though it may not seem so at first, it is easily on par with fma which is impressive because I consider fma to be the perfect anime that has everything.

Steinsgate is also hugely formative if japanesy weirdness doesn't instantly turn you off so if you don't want to be an uncultured anime peasant, you might want to give it a go.

Spice and wolf might also be something you like.
It didn't click with me but I can see why some people really like it.
You can't really prepare for a generic supernatural love story to turn into a story about medieval economy.
Maybe it scratches a hilariously specific itch you didn't even know you had.

And then there are gurren lagann and evengelion.
Those are basic anime education and mandatory to watch. Sorry.

Have you already heard of our Lord and Saviour JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?

[HEADING=1]Our heroes![/HEADING]

[HEADING=1]Our villains![/HEADING]

Well, at least for that season, Battle Tendency. Yes, it is so immensely, fabulously manly that it comes back around from amazingly gay to super straight again. It's the most shonen thing to ever shonen, and it's goddamn glorious. And to boot, each season is relatively self-contained and not too long in terms of episodes.

Alternatively I've been watching Nichijou lately and it's one of the few slice-of-life anime that I've liked. I mean, a deer gets suplexed at one point. What's not to love? And it's only like 26 episodes or something, though I'm not sure whether there's a big overarching plot yet.

Log Horizon is a show about how loads of players of an MMORPG get trapped inside. It's a rather odd series that uses this concept to create a story about government, sociology, and nation building. However, the complex ideas driving the plot are balanced out by gentle comedy and the chemistry of the main cast often being pushed to the forefront. Don't worry, there's still plenty of awesome in there; it just doesn't necessarily come in the form of kick-ass fight scenes, even though they are present.

Also, it would be remiss of me not to recommend Toradora. Being a straight romantic comedy set in present day Japan, it may not appear to align with your tastes. In my opinion, however, it is worth watching the first episode just to see if you like it. If you do, a rather wonderful series that is sweet and ludicrous in equal measure awaits. If not, well, you only wasted 25 minutes.

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade works and Fate/Zero are my instant recommendations to everyonees
Guilty Crown tends to get a mixed reception but I liked it despite it's weak second half
FLCL is really short and high-paced fun that almost everybody likes
Aldnoah Zero is great for some good mech action without dipping your toes into Gundam (and it's scored by Hiroyuki Sawano)
Durarara is a lot of fun and written by the same guy as Baccano, which I didn't like as much
Gurren Lagann is another one everybody likes
Gundam 00 is probably an ideal entry point into the larger Gundam franchise, and is personally my favourite series
Kara no Kyoukai is 8 movie length episodes and while technically in the same universe as the two Fate series mentioned above, neither is required viewing for the other

Ditch Anime for a little while and watch some series with actual people in it for a change;

[sup][sup]This poster is actually rather misleading in regards to the series' direction as there is no romance.[/sup][/sup]
Legal High
Legal High Season 2

"Attorney Komikado Kensuke (Sakai Masato) loves money, prestige & women, but also has a 100% winning rate when it comes to his legal cases. Mayuzumi Machiko (Aragaki Yui) is a rookie attorney who holds a strong sense of justice & passionate about protecting the weak. She is also awkward and rigid in her work. One day, due to unforeseen circumstances, Mayuzumi Machiko begins to work at Komikado Kensuke's law office. The two attorneys constantly clash, but in the courtroom they cooperate to fight as one."

It's a bit of a whacky mix of Phoenix Wright and Doctor House, in a sense. It's a very good show to watch.

Season one counts 11 episodes, season two counts 10 and then there are two specials.

Nobunaga Concerto
Nobunaga Concerto The Movie

Although the Anime of Nobunaga Concerto is basically a flash animation, the "Drama" version is actually a high quality production.
The story is of a modern boy that somehow ends up back in 1570ish Japan where he switches places with the famous Daimyo Oda Nobunaga, the story is that of a boy trying to pretend he is Oda Nobunaga all the while trying to keep the history of Japan from changing.

The series counts 11 episodes.

So, story-heavy short series that feature violence, but don't rely on it? Fun stuff. I'd probably recommend Michiko to Hatchin [https://myanimelist.net/anime/4087/Michiko_to_Hatchin] or Samurai Champloo [https://myanimelist.net/anime/205/Samurai_Champloo]. Both are made by Manglobe and feature a small group of unlikely allies on a journey towards a shared goal, on the run from authorities. Michiko to Hatchin is set someplace in Latin America (Brazil, I think?) in the 70s or so, with only two protagonists. SC is set in the late Tokugawa shogunate with a larger group of protagonists.
By the sounds of it, you might also enjoy Bakemonogatari [https://myanimelist.net/anime/5081/Bakemonogatari] or the "Toaru" series, both Toaru Majutsu no Index [https://myanimelist.net/anime/4654/Toaru_Majutsu_no_Index] and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun [https://myanimelist.net/anime/6213/Toaru_Kagaku_no_Railgun]. All three focus on highschool kids with supernatural powers getting into shenanigans. Considerably longer than your preferred titles (FMA:B aside), with several seasons each. Toaru tends to be a tad lighter and hammier, -monogatari series generally feel a little more serious-like. A little.
Black Lagoon [https://myanimelist.net/anime/889/Black_Lagoon] and Steins;Gate [https://myanimelist.net/anime/9253/Steins_Gate] are both solid titles that more or less seem to fit the general idea as well, but SG features limited violence in comparison to the earlier titles, focusing more on the cerebral side of things, while Black Lagoon is all about hammy over the top 90s style action. Also, BL runs for several seasons and it could be argued the series took something of a downturn with the introduction of a battle meido. The engrish is frequent and horrible too. Good series anyway, mind you. (note - I've been trying to recommend anime other folks didn't mention yet, but I somehow missed SG. Oops. Not gonna delete this entry now that I've typed it all up anyway :D Kudos on mentioning S&W BTW, that's a great one in my books)
If you're looking for something a little older, I'd probably suggest Darker than Black [https://myanimelist.net/anime/2025/Darker_than_Black__Kuro_no_Keiyakusha] or xxxHOLiC [https://myanimelist.net/anime/861/xxxHOLiC]. DtB has a nice suspense/thriller vibe, while xxxHOLiC is more of a series of (usually) loosely connected stories with less violence. Surprisingly, given the title, xxxHOLiC features no sex, explicit or otherwise.
Also, I've seen someone suggest Log Horizon. Great anime too, if you like it, check Overlord [https://myanimelist.net/anime/29803/Overlord] and Maoyu [https://myanimelist.net/anime/14833/Maoyuu_Maou_Yuusha]. The former, much like Log Horizon, sees an avid player getting stuck in a game, following a similar pattern of research and attempts to establish political power with the NPCs, but with a major twist. Maoyu takes a similar idea of Earth knowledge and technology being applied in a fantasy setting, but rather than being a straight up issekai anime, the knowledge in question is being gleaned by a benevolent demon lord from some cosmic library. Incidentally, if I'm discussing "other-world" anime, and in particular the sort that deconstruct the hero/villain dynamics, I would be remiss not to mention Hataraku Maou-sama! [https://myanimelist.net/anime/15809/Hataraku_Maou-sama]. It's a slice of life anime about a demon lord being stuck on Earth with his general, his world's conquering heroine (and further characters as the cast grows at a steady pace), and his struggle to make ends meet and, obviously, conquer this strange new world, starting with seizing the manager position of the local McDonalds knockoff. It's as awesome as it sounds.
I've also seen Mushishi mentioned, if that works for you, try Natsume Yuujinchou [https://myanimelist.net/anime/4081/Natsume_Yuujinchou], the setting may be very different, but both titles share very similar ambience and pacing. Both are pretty great at what they do too :D.

I would pick the series over the movie, the movie wasn't bad at all but it had that "we have a lot of material and not a whole lot of time" feeling to it, so it was kinda rushed and I came out with the feeling that if I wasn't a already existing fan of the series I might've been a little lost.

I wouldn't recommend the movie to most people
