I'll throw Star Wars: Republic Commando into the list. Brilliant, and challenging, sci-fi squad-based FPS. It gives a soldier's view of the Star Wars universe, and despite being a rather short game I have played it for almost 90 hours. In fact, the two major complaints I have about it is how short it is, and that there is no sequel. Still, ordering around your squad mates is fun, and there is an element of strategy involved. Those squad mates have their own personalties, too, leading to some funny banter as you blow up battle droids.

NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got ninjad with one of the few games I never et ninjad on!
GOD DAMNIT Kirke! You are my nemesis from now!!!

P.S. sorry for all the "!"
P.S.S. in case someone didn't understand, StarWars: Republic Commando is an awesome game!!!

I'll also throw in my recommendation for Star Wars Republic Commando :D

Also, Star Wars Battlefront 2 (I think Battlefront 1 as well) allows you to play the entire game in FPS mode if you want (it's in the settings and can even be assigned to a hotkey) so technically I think that counts

For one that hasn't been mentioned yet, I haven't actually played it but I remember hearing good stuff about Sin Episodes: Emergence. For recent stuff that is mainly single player and non-competitive...yeah I haven't got much unfortunately :S

Does Wolfenstein: The New Order count as Scifi? Because it's got giant robots, laser guns and a moon base set in an alternate timeline.

It's also a hell of a lot of fun to play.

Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey, Fear 1, Unreal games, Singularity, Alien Isolation, Borderlands 2, Halo if you've got any xbox.

These are in the order that they came to mind, not really a quality indicator.

Well since most of the good stuff was already mentioned I'm not going to repeat it.
But there is still Serious Sam HD and Serious Sam 3, not the most sci-fi and the story is Duke Nukem level, but if you want to kick some alien monster ass with insane weaponry then that is the way to go.

You can also put Borderlands into the mix, but those games are 60% about loot grinding and the rest of the game is just enough to give you a reason to grind that loot.

Heard Prey is a very good sci-fi FPS.

And since people are arleady throwing rpgmixes: Chronicles of Riddick, good mix of stealthy and shooty action.

The Deus Ex series (The first one is more of an RPG and is the best game ever IMHO)
System Shock 2 (Heavy RPG elements)
Half Life 2
Bioshock series
Quake 4

These would be good to begin with. Too bad there isn't anything recent that comes close to these.

Assault on Dark Athena was actually really good.

The Crysis series has sci-fi elements - cloaking devices, powered armour, etc.
The Alien vs Predator games - generally the older the better (AvP Classic 2000 is often on steam sale)
Bit of a weird one, but Sanctum and Sanctum 2 are sci-fi FPS, though there's a major tower defense element and emphasis on ability synergies.

Most of my other suggestions have already been suggested!

Second this. Serious Sam is hardly serious (Kill a huge number of aliens in wave after wave in exotic locations with interesting weapons) but it's a lot of fun to play. In SS3 I was getting a routine kill count of at least 1000 per level. The final level is at least double if not triple that.

AVP is better for pure terror, but AVP2 has a storyline, where Predator storyline, Alien Storyline and Marine storyline actually cross and affect each other. So you actually have to play all three of them in order to see the full story.

Descent 1 and 2 are pretty incredible. I just finished them a few weeks ago. It's like a FPS flight sim.

I mostly added the caveat to spare the OP wasting money on Colonial Marines! Pretty much agree with you about AVP2 - it was also a tad more refined than it's predecessor in terms of gameplay.
Cutting out the infinitely respawning aliens in the marine campaign must have counted as one of those refinements because it was undoubtedly more balanced, but made it a little less tense overall.

I've been waiting to scratch this itch for a while, and I can't wait for Star Citizen's FPS module to release. Any good suggestions?

For the record, by FPS I mean FPS, not third person. Already played the bajeezus out of Mass Effect.
E.Y.E Divine Cybermacy.

It's a perfect First Person sci-fi shooter. A little old, but still good.

Cheap as chips on Steam as well. Especially when the sales come on (it gets big discounts).

And laughing. A lot. One of a handful of genuinely funny FPS's. Which makes the series particularly appealing since it is one of the rare AAA games that does not take itself so seriously.

I love Planetside 2. You should at least try that, it's free.

You should try Marathon (also free) if you're looking for something old-school.

System Shock 2 is available on Steam, I strongly recommend that one. Pretty much Bioshock in space.

And laughing, yes. I like the little things, like mission briefings or gun names/descriptions. Center stage jokes are more hit and miss.
