Hey everyone, I was hoping maybe people could throw out their favorite SRPGs for the PSP and why they like them. I've never played an SRPG, so I was thinking I might get one to try it out. I've been reading about FF Tactics, Jeanne D'Arc, Tactics Ogre, and Disgaea, but I'm not really sure which one to pick or if there are other good ones I ought to know about.

My preference is for something that is deep strategically, with good documentation (either in game or in manual; I don't want to have to spend time online learning the game mechanics). I also probably prefer something shorter than something that takes 100 hours to finish.

Edit: Forgot to add that a good story is also important to me.

Thanks!

P.S. Is there a difference between a strategic RPG and a Tactical RPG?

I would recommend Tactics Ogre or Disgaea, but if you want a somewhat shorter experience the Jeanne D'Arc isn't a BAD game by any stretch of the imagination. Deep, however, may not be it's strongest point. Tactic's Ogre definitely wins in deep gameplay and great story (literally, AWESOME), but there can be a bit of a grind.

As for FF Tactics, there's this really wierd lag present in the in-game battle menu that bugs the shit out of me, and it suffers from the same "problems" that Tactic's Ogre does.

My recommendations in order:

1) Tactics Ogre
2) Disgaea
3) FF Tactics
4) Jeanne D'Arc

* Based on my own experience having played and finished all four of them.

Strategy RPG's are games like starcraft where you control a lot of people and send them to their death cause your character is wussy (sorry I don't really care for SRPG's mostly cause I suck at them) but on the PSP all I can think of is Valkyria Chronicles 2 and that's a mix of an SRPG and a Tactical RPG. Also I feel I should mention a tactical RPG is the games like FF tactics and the others you mentioned, and because tactics games are some of my favorite I think you should try Jeanne D'arc it is the simplest of the ones you mentioned but is still quite good. Also for FF tactics get the one from the PS store cause the one on the PSP is a poorly made remake with a ton of slowdown. FF tactics will also fulfill those requirements of having to think strategically and comes with a digital manual (when got from PSN).

There's no difference between a tactical RPG and an SRPG. Or rather, I'm not sure "tactical RPG" is a subgenre. If there is a difference, it isn't worth caring about.

Of those four, Tactics Ogre and Disgaea have the best mechanics. Disgaea can get a bit grindy if you want to unlock the extra content. Given that there's more extra content in that game than most games have ordinary content, well, Disgaea can get a bit grindy. FF Tactics is great too, featuring what I believe to be the best storyline in the entire Final Fantasy franchise.

Haven't played Jeanne D'arc. It's on my shelf, will get around to it eventually.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. And girls too possibly. I decided to go with FF tactics after a good bit of research. I read that the menus in Tactics Ogre are really bad, and I know from experience this would really, really annoy me. I realize that Tactics has the slowdown issue, but I think that will bother me less than bad menus. Also, Tactics is cheaper.
