I don't have a DS, but Dragon Quest 9 looks good from the ads I have seen of it. The game looks fun.

DRAGON QUEST 9

its a great game, fun plot, great battle system. It just generolly rocks, lot of class options to pick from and Enix treats its flag ship franchise well constantly releasing completly free updates for the game. This is the absolute must pick for a great jrpg on the DS, hell one of the best rpgs J or otherwise out there. ITs a great game lets you really explore the world, and once you get the boat you can go absolutly everywhere.

So yea...

I love Dragon Quest 9, its a great addition to the best jrpg series and is a must have for any ds library.

the number 1 game in japan cant suck right :D
I have a question for you, I do not have a DS, but dragon quest 9 looks really fun. I can't really decide whether or not I should get a DS to play it or not, so I guess I am asking is dragon quest 9 a good reason to get a DS?

The World Ends with You. The best original RPG on the DS, easy. The other option would be Chrono Trigger, which is one of the best RPGs ever made (remade from the SNES). Either of those cannot go wrong. Both are amazing; Chrono Trigger is an epic fantasy, and The World Ends with You is an awesome character-driven and pop-inspired work. Both are among the absolute best the DS has to offer, and considering the system's huge library of amazing games, that says something.

Chrono Cross, I think they re-released it on the DS and it'll probably have some new features as well.

I recently got the new Mario and Luigi and... I wouldn't really recommend it. It is just too shallow for me. I also have Final Fantasy 4, and I cannot get into it. I have Pokemon HeartGold, and I am getting bored of that. As you can tell I'm not a big RPG fan, but there is one game I really do like: Chrono Trigger. The story is solid and the turned based battles are all fun with many characters with a variety of different moves so it doesn't get boring. What I don't like is that the boss battles are too long.

That is all I can recommend.

What the heck, no one has said Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey? It's probably the best RPG on the whole DS, goddamn.

Try the new Golden Sun game.
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.
Of course, it would be better to play the previous two GBA games first...
But the new one recently came out in America, and releases on the 10th for the UK.
Not sure about the Netherlands, though.
This^^^

Golden Sun is awesome, and the newest iteration just came out. Why don't you already have it?!
it's not out here, yet.

Although DQ9 is certainly good, getting a DS for one game seems like a waste to me. I'd advise you to check out at least a few others first ( a good few mentioned in this thread are excellent options ) to make sure you're not just throwing money away for a single game.

DQ4 is excellent, old school medieval fantasy and combat. I'll also second Strange Journey, an awesome game which plays like Pokemon except instead of catching monsters your chatting up demons and angels. Also has a fairly dark plot.

Though you really can't go wrong with anything listed in this thread.

Chrono Trigger. Is there anything else that needs to be said? Sure, its really a SNES game, but it still holds up fantastically. I definitely recommend it.

The World Ends With You--it can be a little jarring at first, but it has a great story and fun gameplay and wonderful soundtrack.

I can also second the rec for Devil Survivor. It's a good introduction to the MegaTen series, and then you can completely lose your mind with the Persona series.

play chrono trigger.
If you already have beat it, play it again. The replayability is most enjoyable.
