Hoo boy, sad songs. Fortunately I've got a lot that are quite good.

First up, Kamelot's "Don't You Cry"

"Anthem"

This piano version of Bloody Tears from Castlevania:

And lastly, for good measure, Hubris: Reprise from Soul Calibur II:

Other recommendations:
EdenEcho, Temples of Gold, Glory (Kamelot)
The Islander (Nightwish)
The Best is Yet to Come (Metal Gear Solid OST)
The Alleged Paradigm (Epica)
Who Wants to Live Forever (David Garrett [Queen Cover])
huge post is huge.

There's a modern song called "Mad World" it features piano. It was used in the first trailer for Gears of War.

Another sad song, about a man who commits suicide, is called "Yuma" by Justin Townes Earle. It doesn't feature piano, but it is sad and slow enough. A song that's not as sad but still good would be "Lone Pine Hill" also but Justin. Look 'em up. I use playlist.com.
I control+fed just to find that song. You are correct, the old one is techno so ruins the whole sad effect.

Here it is

Enjoy, some clips with OST from The Fountain. Clint Mansell is fantastic.

http://www.youtube.com/v/aCCIa_C3rsE - This one's performed on guitar, but it is simply Amazing.
There's also this video in Russian. It's about WWII and I don't know if it's the same way in the West, but every Russian person's touched by it :)

Not the original, by Nine Inch Nails. No offense to the band, but Johnny Cash took this song to a new level. Even Reznor agreed the song was no longer his own. It's just incredible.

You want some sad stuff? Well, you've asked at the right time and place then my friend.

Octavarium is ~27 minutes long, and you can find the other two parts among the related vids. And there you go.

This always brings a tear to my eye.
Wow, that's at least a couple thousand times better than the Jason Mraz "Always On My Mind".
Then again, that's not really saying anything.

Anyways, this one's kind of sad and VERY calming.

Mood Indigo, written in 1930 (performed in...1937, in the video,) it's very depressing. One of those songs that's played when a character is sad and is walking down a rainy street.

Hopefully it works for you.
