I highly recommend Eldritch. Think of it as Thief meets Splunky. If I have one complaint, it is that the game can be too forgiving, though new game+ ramps up the difficulty.

I'd suggest Theif 2 if you haven't already played it. Also it's leaps and bounds better than the original.
Indeed? What makes it better?
The story is great, not that Thief1s is all bad, but it's focused more on urban sneaking than the increasingly fantastical elements of the first.

The key thing, IMO, is that they knew not to fix something that wasn't broken and just focused on pumping out some really good missions to play. Lot's of maps that have different settings and challenges.

-Dishonored has great open levels, multiple approaches and lets you make great use of such powers as Blink (teleport) and Possess.
-The Batman: Arkham games have great stealth sections that build off you terrorizing the armed gunmen you're hunting.
-Mark of the Ninja has beautiful animation, and plenty of cool ways to sneak past enemies if you're on a no-kill run.
-Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode 2 takes on a much heavier stealth emphasis.
-Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor lets you build up your own Orc army behind enemy lines and call on them to aid you in battle; imagine having your target surrounded by orcs, half of whom are on your side, signaling them to attack, then killing your target in the chaos.

Mark of the Ninja
I'm normally very biased against sidescroller stealth games but after playing Gunpoint and having just watched the first part of a MotN series... looks like it has potential to be something I'll enjoy thanks for that

Death to Spies series
Just looked up a video for that game. The voice acting makes my ears cry :( Its a shame because it looks like a decent game but bad voice acting can really turn me off.
If you enjoy Mark of the Ninja, you should check out Assassin Creed Chronicles China, its sort of a rip off of Mark of the Ninja but its a decent stealth game and the only AC game to actually encourage stealth and ghosting.

Thief 2 mostly has a few subjective changes, the environments are more grounded and the enemies are more steam punk and less fantasy, theirs no supernatural enemies apart from a few secret areas, you face mechanical robots and security cameras instead. Their is a few gameplay changes mainly new items like summoning monsters and a scouting orb which act like sticky cameras in Splinter Cell. The biggest improvement is the maps, which are much more detailed than Theif Gold's maps.

You should stick with Death to Spies, the story is a a little less involved that Hitman Blood money, just a framing device for a set of unconnected missions, you can safely skip all the cutscenes. Also I don't think there is an anything worthwile in eavsdropping on conversations. So the voice acting can be safely ignored.

Invisible Inc is a good stealth game if you arn't set on the First/3rd genre.
Chalk up another vote for Invisible Inc. It's a different sort of stealth game from the rest to be sure, but worth a look. It's an isometric, turn based stealth game where you control a group of 2-4 agents infiltrating randomly generated buildings and making off with the loot inside. There isn't exactly time pressure, the game being turn based and all, but more defenses activate the more turns you spend in a level, and on the harder difficulties infiltrations that start off silent often end in a mad dash to the exit as every guard in the complex rushes to your location. There's also permadeath and extremely limited initial options for your agents - you basically have to steal everything you're going to use, picking missions likely to have the resources you need at the time. I'd say give it a look.

Another stealth lover, excellent! So many good options already mentioned though.

Styx is under-exposed for how good it can be for pure stealthing with an old school feel to it. The jumping is far too forgiving/accurate, i always expect to fail the thin beam leaping areas but never have as of yet. Maybe due to the lack of animation for one-foot-off landings, I don't know. Chalk it up as a positive, either way.

I would say Abe's odyssee is quite stealth focused, lots of sneaking, insta-death, strategic thinking. They still mix it up with many other sections however.

Mark of the Ninja has been thoroughly recommended, so here is another + recommendation for it...can't hurt, right?

I'd imagine you might have played Far cry 3 and/or 4. In case you haven't though, the main crunchy centre of gameplay is wandering at your own pace, finding bases to stealthily take down. They can have some unscripted events which add to great moments of aggressive wildlife doing your job for you. With cathartic Elephant riding and hoverboat sliding for those why-the-fck-not momemts too!

Not sure what stealth inc. is like, have yet to be enticed enough to try.

I see the last of us here also, some pretty good stealth in that game. But it can and does often descend into anarchy. Perhaps there is a realistic option I have missed in there though. Oh, it has probably the best stealth based team-multiplayer I have experienced. Very tense. You learn many tactics as you play but they are very reluctant to give you silenced weapons at first. A quick wiki skim is advised beforehand, during and after.

Since all of the my other suggestions have been listed, I'm going to extend this:

Either one of the psp Syphon Filter games. Logan's Shadow was actually written by Gregg Rucka (of Queen and Country fame).
and say you should play all of the Syphon Filter games. Even the PS1 titles still hold up, save the graphical fidelity which is dated to say the least. Gameplay, story, characters, and the music (ye gods, the music); all sublime.

Granted, they're not entirely stealth based, and you'll need to run-n-gun through quite a few sections, but the stealth is tense and very satisfying.

This probably isn't the genre you had in mind, but I'm partial to F-117 Nighthawk: Stealth Fighter 2.0. Fly what was the premier stealth airplane of the time in a variety of missions inspired by "what if" scenarios and actual military events. Weave your way through a perilous gauntlet of radar stations, missile batteries and patrolling fighters to bomb or photograph your target, then do it all over again on the way back.

There are two versions of the aircraft available with radically different play styles. The Lockheed F-117 has virtually no means of defending itself when its cover is blown, but it's extremely hard for the enemy to detect it in the first place. While the fictional "Microprose" variant is much easier to detect, it boasts improved weaponry to help blast its way out of trouble.

You can pick it up for $5.99 on GOG if you're interested. Just be ready to soldier through some ancient visuals and a bit of a learning curve. I'd recommend reading up on the controls before you jump in.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes has some good hardcore stealth, that is, if you turn off Reflex mode. And seeing as it's the first entry in the series that doesn't control like a shopping cart, the stealth action is actually satisfying. There's still the odd stealth genre issues, like enemies not wising up when they find a tranquilizer dart stuck in their arm or not sounding the alarm after regaining consciousness from being strangled.
Ground Zeroes was fun but I'd only recommend it if it's on sale.Considering you can see pretty much everything it has to offer in about 2 hours it's really not worth paying full price

Alpha Protocol was a fairly enjoyable stealth game. Although you might not want to level up TOO high in stealth if you still want a challenge. It also has a lot of chit-chat RPG stuff in it too, consequences for choices and stuff, which gives it a LOT of replay value if you like it. I hear a lot of people don?t like it though, so I guess it?s one of those ?hit-or-miss? games. Personally, I love the game. Good thing it has a lot of replay value in it too, because it took me about 3 playthroughs to fully understand what the hell is going on. :p
I'll second this recommendation.Alpha Protocol is one of my favourite games from the last gen.It does get a bit easy if you fully level up stealth but it's well worth playing for the story and how your choices affect it.

And because I enjoyed it but never hear it mentioned I'll nominate Rush'N Attack:Ex Patriot. It's a remake of an 80's arcade game but where the original was a straight up run and gunner(or run and knifer to be precise)the remake relies much more on stealth

Splinter Cell. (Choose one, though their range of stealth/action vary wildly, as do their sense of fair play.)

Hitman.

If you want something really poor, play Alien: Isolation.

Well, 2 hours is a bit of an exaggeration, unless you're an absolute stealth pro or you're just going through it guns blazin'.

Not that much of an exaggeration really.Given the size of the map and the fact that there's only a handful of missions a couple of hours isn't that unrealistic unless you're going for 100% completion. As I said fun game but I personally don't think it's worth ?20(or ?40 or whatever ridiculous price Konami were charging on launch).I think I paid about ?7 and I was happy enough with the amount of content at that price

Edit:As an aside OP never specified a platform and Ground Zeroes is free on Xbox One at the moment so it's definitely worth it at that price;)
