The OP might want first person shooters with good multiplayer, in which case I'd actually recommend Quake Live .. it's free, has a high skill ceiling, and good competitive scene.

I'd say the best deal for your money would be getting the half-life games. If you act while the sale is still going on you can get them for 75% off (or possibly 85% if you have L4D or L4D2).

and while you're at it tack The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom on there. It is $0.49 and it is a good puzzle platformer.
