a) plays like the campaign mode in the Total War series.
Stardock's Elemental War of Magic to be released September 2010. It's a 4x tbs, with realtime battles like Total War(I think) set in a fantasy universe. Player made units (with chosen equipment and how long trained) A dynastic system with a inherited genetic algorithm Stardock is shipping it with mod tools, so there will be more content from both Stardock and other Players. And one of your units is basically a god

I'm trying to promote Elemental, since Stardock doesn't do advertising ;P

If you want a strategy game now try Stardock's Galactic Empires(2 not 1), the Europa series, Crusader Kings, Knights of Honor, or The Guild(Which is economic growth, but has poor graphics and alot of lists)

SimEarth.

That's is really old school. but not as good as simlife or simisland
I disagree.

It's not as good as SimAnt, but that's a very niche game. Which is probably the third best simulation game ever made, next to the Sims 2 Deluxe Edition.

Funny follow-up story, bro.

Good news: I got my hands on a copy of Europa Universalis 3.

Bad news: It bricked my laptop. No kidding.

Good news: It's not the game's fault, the GPUs coming off the production line that were installed in my model of ASUS laptop were glitchy and prone to burn out after 2 years.

Bad news: It's my only computer and it'll take two months to fix.

Good news: They might offer me a cheap upgrade, or give me a motherboard/GPU from a better computer.

Bad news: My warranty (conveniently, only 2 years) is up and I'll have to pay money either way.

So, I heard you were having computer issues too in one of the ME2 threads, I feel your pain man.

Once I get a new rig, I'll let you know how the game is.

If you don't mind sci-fi, I would say Sins of a Solar Empire.
It's real-time, yet has wonderful turn-based elements in it, which make it both exciting and slow paced enough to still appeal to a strategy gamer. I'm not big on RTS micromanaging games either, so I'm looking around and found Solium Infernum. It's more of a board game than a traditional strategy game, but it plays beautifully!

Warcraft III, it doesn't fit your criteria but you should still play it anyway.
While the campaign story was pretty interesting for me, the missions themselves were all more or less the same and quickly became boring, as for the gameplay itself, I didn't enjoy it as an RTS so much, it wasn't bad but relatively average. The editor... That was f**king brilliant. I'm a fairly cynical guy and still maintain that the large majority of user created content is still shit, Warcraft has had some legendary maps and is still very popular.

Heroes is an excellent TBS game if you like them, I played 3 for years and still occasionally go to play either that or 5 with my siblings. The biggest downfall of the game is that it takes pretty long just to finish one match.

I've already been right thoroughly ninja'd on the Paradox games.

If it's builders you're after? For historical, you can't go wrong with Patrician III and Port Royale 2 (both available dirt cheap on Steam), Railroad Tycoon 2 is still awesome fully 12 years after its initial release, Caesar IV is pretty much the gold standard if you want something Roman, and SimCity 4 is a delight as well. If you've got a fairly recent computer, Tropico 3 is great; if your computer isn't so recent, go with Tropico 1 (again, available dirt cheap on Steam.)

Trouble is, the builder genre's been all but dead in the water since 2004. Word is, however, that Kalypso Media is releasing Patrician IV in September, developed by Daniel Dumont and Bernd Ludewig (the guys behind the aforementioned P3/PR2). That one's got a chance (albeit a small one, considering Fallout: New Vegas) to be the 2010 Game of the Year on my list.

If you want something economicly based theres always --the settlers-- games although they kinda got worse as the went on.
Also theres --Cultures-- which is kinda old but good for economic planing and war.

Dont know any that are much like total war games though

How about Ironclad's Sins of a Solar Empire? That's a pretty solid strategy game with a little management, a research tree and lots of rts fun.

You get to build massive fleets, jump them in your enemy's solar system and obliterate their ships, spacestation and bombard their planets or try to make them join your cause by spreading your influence.

It's really quite awesome.

Edit - oops, Sorry Telperion, I failed to notice your post, but.. I obviously agree with your recommendation.
