I've already read bram Stoker's Dracula, Salem's lot, I tried Dead until Dark, and I skimmed Twilight. What I want is a modern-day vampire story (not a romance), where the vampire is either the protagonist or at least a frequently recurring character (like Bill or Edward). I'm not into Anne Rice, so don't bother mentioning her.

Edit: I didn't actually like Twilight. Really shoulda mentioned that.

Then prepare for shit covered in shit. All modern-day supernatural stories tend to fail from what I've read and seen.

EDIT:

You should try the Saga of Darren Shan. Those are quite good. Twelve books in all, you can get through each one in about a day (I did), and they are an interesting read. Well, that's my two cents on this.
I like Darren Shan.

Let the Right One In - or see the film version - it's also fantastic! ;)
I'd forgotten about that one. And doing that is pretty hard, since I live in Sweden where that author is very popular and often mentioned in book discussions. And it means I am able to read the book without translation.

Have you ever read Preacher? One of the main characters is a vampire, and it's a fairly modern-day setting - the 90s, I think - so it covers your bases.

It's a comic book series rather than a novel, of course, but all the better for it.

Hmm you should read City of Bones (and City of Ashes/City of Glass both in the trilogy) however it is a romance and though none of the main characters are vampires it is that sort of modern supernatural genre that I think you are hinting towards. I don't know if you would like it but I would really recomend taking a look at it :)

Twice. Maybe the best comic book series ever.
Sir, you are incorrect. The best comic book series ever is Hellblazer. Preacher is number two, with third place being taken up by The Invisibles, in all it's insane, hard to understand glory.

Darren Shan all the way. Read the whole series then grind it a very fine powder and snort it off a copy Arkham Asylum Serious House on A Serious Earth.

Or you might like Eclipse.

And if you're feeling a little adventurous, Breaking Dawn.

I read a book by Pike called "the last vampire" a long time ago, but I can't remember for the life of me if it was any good or not. It might be worth a check though.

Read The Historian by someone I can't remember. I'm sure someone can remind me. It's probably one of the best modern vampire books you can hope to get your claws on.

And I'd avoid Darren Shan. Unless you're 10. I read them years ago and picked one up the other day and it was... well, crap.

I suppose I should come right out and suggest 'I Am Legend' as a worthy candidate.
Granted it is quite a short book but excellent when it comes to making a science behind the Vampire myth.
