If your PC can handle it, I would recommend the following games.

Fallout 2 (absolutely brilliant and you can have a vehicle to move around the world later on)

Planescape Torment (a game that defies description)

Giants citizen Kabuto (great fun and so very very funny)

Beyond Good and Evil (just a great game which was sadly ignored)

The problem with these games is not the amount of graphical power needed to play them but getting them to work with windows 7 could be a problem.

I know GoG.com do Planescape and Beyond good and evil, but I cant remember if fallout 2 and Giants are in their catalogue.

GoG's games will run on windows 7 and cost generally between 5 and 10 dollars each but they have no DRM.

BTW just go and watch the cutscenes from Giants on you Tube, another game by the same company is armed and dangerous, not quite as good as it is a straight FPS but the shark gun is brilliant.

I can confirm that GoG does all of the games mentioned above in their catalogue.

People have already mentioned Mass Effect & Dragon Age, and it's worth reiterating. Both should fit the required timesink requirements, but also are very replayable.

The two Mass Effect titles can be found for a modest price (~$20 for ME2, ME1 is probably tough to track down but should be reasonably priced). It's a hybrid of RPG customization and third person shooting (fitting the sci-fi space opera setting), along with a strong emphasis on dialogue & choices. For a single playthrough, ME1 clocks in at around 15-20 hours and ME2 at 25-30 hours. The preferred version for the games would be probably the Xbox 360, mostly because the PS3 does not have access to ME1 (Microsoft published ME1, EA published ME2); the PC versions are also acceptable (but harder to track down). Yes, it's HIGHLY recommended you play ME1 first; it actually enhances the experience of playing through ME2 (better feeling for the events/lore & tons of little additions if you completed various sidequests).

Dragon Age: Origins has the "Ultimate Edition" floating around, which contains all the DLC and the expansion (Awakening) for the price of a full game ($50-60). It's officially referred to as a "dark fantasy tactical RPG", and there are quite a few similarities to the general setup seen in MMOs; only this time you have control over the full party and there's no grinding for random drops. It's also been called a throwback to more traditional (PC) RPG design (meaning it can be a unforgiving & tough to get into), and it is a beast of a game. Not only does a typical playthrough last 50-60+ hours for Origins(Awakening being around half that), there is a mountain of choices available to you. The preferred version here is the PC, though the versions on the 360 & PS3 are viable options... it's just really obvious the game is designed for the PC. Dragon Age II is technically a sequel to DA:O, but the storyline connections between the two titles are loose at best. It's certainly not a bad game, but in the end DA:O is (arguably by far) the better option.

---

There's a lot of great games out there, but very few would probably fit the needed timesink requirements without falling into the catagory of "endless game" (which MMOs fit into). Bioware's RPGs are probably the best place to look first, being stellar games that are of a sizable length. And unlike many of the more linear RPGs (JRPGs like the Final Fantasy series being a prominent example), there is a high degree of replayability due to how much you can affect the story's progression through your decisions.

If I had to recommend between either Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins... well, I've gotten more playtime out of ME1 & ME2 than I have out of DA:O. That might be due to my computer struggling to handle DA:O (completed the game once, but the epic battle sequences were painfully laggy), whereas I have no issues with ME1&2 on my 360. Both would be ideal, but I would suggest you pick the setting you prefer as your first pick.

Both Fallout 1 and 2 are on GOG. So is Arcanum, a game with very similar gameplay but taking place in a fantasy tolkienesque setting going through an industrial revolution. Haven't bought any of them on GOG cause I already have them.

Thanks nameless,

At the time I wrote the original post I wasnt sure :).

The major problem for me is I have a lot of these classic games on CD yes I have the original Baldur's gate on 5cd's with tales being the 6th. The original runs fine on windows 7.

I also have Baldurs Gate 2 as well on CD.

Icewind Dale is a different matter it just crashes and that is 1 and 2.

Now try and play MOO2 on windows 7 without GOG helping you out , forget it.

Great games but Microsoft really did screw up backward compatability.

Before you post your top 10 all time favorites, lemme go ahead and narrow the spectrum to a good laser focus:
-has to have a seriously long play time
-available on DS, 360, PS3, PC, GBA
-could find it preowned or low price
-if it has online play, PS3 is preferred
-downloadble titles acceptable
-no MMOs
-RPG is okay
-can be shallow or deep
-no Kinect or Move titles (there's one PS3 move game I want and it's the one that made the Wii profitable, NMH Paradise)
-can have high octane action, slow paced puzzles, and places where I should think before acting(preferred)

Okay that's probably all I need, the budget thing is because I'm still in Highschool, I haven't been to the bank in awhile, and I want a game that will entertain me for a long time so it doesn't feel like I buy a video game as soon as im bored. Handheld is acceptable no PSP though. Thank you 'scapists.
Here you go Etrian Odyssey 2 for the DS is what I recommend woudl likely be cheap and preowned and cartridges don't take any damage in most cases good as new. it's 13 $ preowned at gamestop and this game will take awhile to beat.
you have to think VERY carefully before you make moves in this game.
Tell me if you get it.

I'd like to reaffirm the previous recommendations of Deus Ex. It's ten bucks on Steam, has low system requirements, and is one of the best games of all time. Tough to describe just what about it is so amazing, but once you get a few levels in, it begins to transcend the medium.

Country
'Merica
Gender
3 children in a trench coat
Demon's Souls for PS3
Assassin's Creed 2
Red Dead Redemption
GTA4
Left4Dead for PC
Fallout 3
Morrowind

All will give you quite a few hours of gameplay, especially if you get them on PC because they have fantastic mods.

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is still sucking me in and you can get it via steam for the deluxe edition (which includes the core game, the shivering isles expansion, knights of the nine and all the DLC content) for about 25 bucks. It's incredibly open-ended but the storyline is fascinating and the graphics are amazingly beautiful. Plus the PC version is very mod-friendly so you can further tweak the game to meet your needs.

It would help if you told us what you already have. Anyway, both Mass Effect games on any console, not sure which is the best, Red Dead Redemption, Just Cause 2, Lost Odyssey is a great RPG if you can handle a small bit of Japanese influence, and you should get the Banjo-Kazooie games off XBLA.

Pokemon Red - for the GBA, natch
I'd say Pokemon Crystal, although you can't go wrong with Gen. 1.

Also, Metroid Fusion.
I respect your concern to aid me in my search for new games by eliminating titles I already own, but I have A LOT OF GAMES, some are still in he coach cushion. It'd take way too long to list 'em all. And I guessing should look at Lost Oddysey, I didn't get really far, but I prefer Kaim to Cloud any day. And Just Cause 2 seems to have the necessary low limits of restraint that allow me to cause as much chaos as I desire

Nope, not a port it's from Atlus it's over here in NA.
However this is a company that said "'We get off on your tears."
If you get it be prepared to get your ass kicked and it WILL be a time eater.
It's an RPG in CLASSIC form. It's worth 13$.

If you're looking for good games at cheap prices, try <a src="http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php
">iji and cave story. Both are free side scrolling shooters with a good story and lots of hidden secrets. They should keep you busy for several hours each. It's rare when you find someone who doesn't like these games.

Ace of Spades is another fun free game. The best way to describe it is, "You got your minecraft in my online FPS!" Speaking of FPS games,
Interstellar Marines has some cool stuff available for free. (Although no multiplayer yet.) Also, if you really want free FPS games, Combat Arms isn't a half bad FPS for the price of totally free. Nexon also has a RPG game called Mabinogi, and Vindictus is a new action game that's supposed to have real physics, but I haven't tried either of them out yet. (I'm not one for RPGs, but Vindictus has been on my list for a while.)

Along with minecraft and some console sandbox favorites like Red Dead Redemption, I'd have to recommend picking up a copy of Roller Coaster Tycoon 2. It's good for hours of fun, and you can get the triple expansion pack for almost nothing now days.

If you've got a DS, I'd recommend picking up mario 64 if you haven't already played it. It's a good platformer with a high amount of quality levels, even if the controls are a little picky. Along in the realm of platformers, it goes without saying that portal 1/2 are highly recommended.

I'll toss in a mention to any console online store. Super Meat Boy (360/pc) is an awesome platformer, and Fluidity (wii) is pretty fun. Machinarium is another fun downloadable game.

I'll also throw in a mention to age of empires II and the original starcraft. Cheap, and fun, if you like RTS games.

If you have some spare time, just go this thread. It's got a huge massive list of awesome games, and since they aren't very well known, most of them are fairly cheap.
