So. Im a Scandinavian guy, who has never really like japanese animation. Therefore, I do not think i have watched any serious Anime-films in my entire life. But being a huge film-nerd, I cannot accept a fact that there could be a genre that doesn't include any movies I like. So I turn to you dear escapist.

I would Like to see a film that could change the whole way I look at japanese animated movies. So... What do you think is the movie that defines anime-movies? What is the anime equivelant of Clockwork Orange, Reservoir Dogs, Nosferatu or Vertigo? I would really like to see a meaningful and deep anime-movie.
Noticed you've undulged in GITS (a rather unfortunate acronym *shrug*)
GITS2 is alright (very good looking, if a bit shiny tending towards fuzzy, but not anything to write home about)
"Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is nothing short of awesome (though it's better if you watch the TV series first, one of the few I wholeheartedly recommend) for having undoubtedly the best purely 2D animated aerial dogfight in cartoon history (my opinion, though I'm sure many will agree) as well as an excellent pacy story
"Akira" is OK as well (quite visceral, just soak it in and don't bother thinking about the plot)
"Sky Crawlers" is also nothing short of awesome for having an awesome 2D/3D mixed dogfight, might be a bit heavy though, deep-meaning-wise (actually a good analogy for the modern anime industry, unfortunately)
"Sword of the Stranger" is pretty good too, but once again don't bother too much about the story, the art is brilliant, the characters are simple but well explained/thought out, and the fight scenes (especially the final fight) are top-notch

And, it's been said before but, anything from Studio Ghibli (Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata in particular)

Enjoy!

Another good one that so far has not been mentioned is The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
And if you like giant robot action, the Evangelion Rebuild films. The first one, 1.11, You Are (Not) Alone is out with an English dub. I don't believe the second is yet, at least not here >.>
2.22's dub is done and is gonna be released in the US around the end of March. Or if you're unlucky, like myself, the UK release date is sometime in June or July I think. Not fair since 1.11 was pure epicness and 2.22 subs are not only hard to find but usually of poor quality.

While it's not a movie, you should watch Trigun.
It's got cowboys, and it's post-apocalyptic, and the main character, while he is a gunman, refuses to seriously harm another human being.

Did I mention it's really funny?
It's really funny.
You forgot to mention that the music is fantastic, and there's a whole bunch of wacko characters AND some moderately deep moral debate as well.

Hell, it's a better western than most westerns from the....west (I am now confus).
Hey guys, I watched the first 3 episodes. English dub unfortunatelly and it sure looks fun. Of course, it's not as serious as I hoped from this thread, but it is nice to see something funny for a change too.
All the things you mentioned came true pretty accuratelly and the only problem I really had with the show, is that it's just a little bit TOO japanese. I apologize if I sound like a racist asshole. That's not what I mean.

Just the facial expressions on the characters, sometimes even the characters and a small portion of the humor just is filled with that, really, really, really japanese style, which made me avoid anime in the first place. Kinda reminds me of pokemon... There, now you all hate me for mentioning pokemon. But with that said, it looks like an enjoyable show, and being a post-apocalyptia-freak I'm probably gonna sit trough the rest of the show. It's only 26 episodes long, isn't it?

I second that.

If you liked the Ghost in the shell films you'll most likely enjoy the series GITS: Stand alone complex, I'd also recommend the Appleseed cgi films (as more an eye candy explodey action flick) .
