In the time I've been lurking here you people have appeared tasteful enough.
I've just finished Deathnote and I believe it is one of the greatest things ever, right behind Java and rice pudding. I've also loved watching every Full Metal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop episode. Perhaps I enjoyed Akira and Ghost in the Shell a bit too much. I've tried some others, like Bleach and Onepiece, but they're just too cartoony for my tastes.

tl;dr

Know of any rather dark, mostly serious animes?

Based on the things you mentioned: Mirai Nikki, Code Geass, Black Lagoon. Also check out the other versions of GitS if you haven't, I personally enjoy the Stand Alone Complex TV series (especially the first season) a lot more than the movies.

Also note that Mirai Nikki is currently airing for the first time in Japan, so there's no official overseas releases or dubs (if you're into that). And it's only 10/14 eps in.

Damn it no one ever want a Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann suggestion :( Uh I'd say Berserk then, Its a pretty dark Medieval/War type anime, although the anime itself only covers the first 1/3 of the story, the manga has a lot more on it, and the manga is a lot better , although the animes still pretty good itself

Serial Experiment Lain is nice. Elfen Lied and of course, Higurashi.

All three of them are dead serious and their style of execution is brilliant. Mirai Nikki also looks promising so also look into that.

Also Mnemosyne. It's also a dark, but highly sexual and action-y anime.

Your choice mate. :D

I watch anime movies more than series, which is why "Perfect Blue" and "Grave Of The Fireflies" are what I have for you. Both definitely extremely heavy films, but while Perfect Blue is the type of psychological thriller/mindbender you're probably looking for, Grave Of The Fireflies is most definitely a war movie. It's also my favourite film of all time, though, so take that for what you will. Roger Ebert talks about it better than I could: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20000319/REVIEWS08/3190301/1023

FLCL- Silly. yes. Gloriously fun. Yes. Which is not to say it doesn't have its moments of maturity as well.
Samurai Champloo- This is made by the same guy who made Cowboy Bebop so you'll probably love this one. Basically what Cowboy Bebop does for jazz Samurai Champloo does for rap.
Hellsing- Alucard is badass that is all you'll need to know.
Baccano!- It's extremely creative and is filled with loads and loads of memorable and fun characters.
Durarara!- Same thing I said about Baccano except in a different setting and with a different cast of fun characters. It's made by the same guy too.

Fairly Broad appeal:
Baccano! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/anime/6404-Anime-Review-Baccano]
Monster [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=969] (Dark and Serious extraordinaire; It's basically a noir thriller)
Berserk [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=57]
Black [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=1147] Lagoon [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=1148]
Excel Saga [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=270] (surprisingly dark at times, anything but serious)

More dependant on personal taste:
Spice & Wolf [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=1055]
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/anime/6503-Anime-Review-Higurashi-When-They-Cry]
Kara no Kyoukai - The Garden of Sinners [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.304952-TYPE-MOON-Review-Anniversary-Kara-no-Kyoukai]
Grave of the Fireflies [http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=110]
Puella Magi Madoka Magica [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.275533-Puella-Magi-Madoka-Magica-Review]
(On the surface, it looks cute and crappy. It's anything but)
Steins;Gate [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/steins-gate/episodes-1] (The game is better though)
Texhnolyze [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/texhnolyze/dvd-1]
Fate/Zero [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/fate/zero/episodes-1]
(reviews are decidedly mixed on this one, and the lore behind it rather extensive, so perhaps very dependant on taste)

neon genesis evangelion - I can?t recommend the old ones because the don?t hold up that well. but evangelion 1.11 you are not alone and evangelion 2 are awesome and some of the most well made ( from a technical standpoint ) anime out there .
I respectfully disagree, I would recommend anyone to watch the original series along with End of Evangelion.
