Something other than WoW, because that's what I play at the moment. Free to play, or a low price is good, and I lean toward a fantasy setting.

Star Wars The Old Republic in 2 months.

Well it's not free to play but... well too bad it's the new best one.

Well most of the decent ftp ones i know of are pretty much just crappy versions of wow. The best one probably being perfect world online, or lotro.

If your willing to spend money but not be stuck with monthly fees look no farther then guild wars. The seconds coming out but not for a while. So you could easily get through all the campains and have some nice equipment for the release of gw2 :D

I actually wouldn't recommend DDO if you want to play in smaller time segments. Getting any content at higher levels will take quite some time just to find a group, let alone clear a instance.

How old are you? Range wise. If you are looking for something combat wise, I'd say Vindictus is pretty descent. I got bored of it cause at the time it was early in the game and I got through most of it already, the side quests are grindtastic. But its gained popularity and more character options so I'd sa that.

I'd recomend Guild Wars 1, its a fantasy set game and is really fun. Is different then WoW so that makes all the difference.

I'd wait for Guild Wars 2, which is coming out early next year.

I'm going to recommend Dungeon Blitz. It's not geared towards the hardcore audience, and it's userbase is comprised of about five people, but it's well paced, doesn't rely on grinding, and has genuinely fun combat and some clever writing.

DDO; free to play, good updates(when they update they go BIG), great game play, good combat, and excellent difficulty. Its free to play but i suggest spending 10 bucks on some points cards for the premium bonus(its permanent if you buy something from the store) its just convenience. I say this to everyone because tis important; DO NOT GRIND! I don't care how fast you went from Ekrund to Karaz-a-Karak in WAR or dun morogh to Icecrown in WoW; grinding this game to max level will burn you out in the first 5 levels. Guild wars(not a big fan anymore).

I don't recommend ToR because its an EA product and i hate those greedy bastards for several hundred reasons; and because its going to be one of the pander MMOs in which they cave and nerf every thing by breaking its limbs and declawing it. That and its standard gameplay template.
Except it's also published by LucasArts which has complete control and designed by BioWare. EA may be the devil but they can't compete with LA.

DDO is ok. I used to play it a lot when it was PtP. The grinding is easy as all hell. Even after you TR. There are some things they do terribly wrong though, other than the fact that Turbine is a fail company. Charging for most of the content and the TR system both split the player base, which is a big no-no in FtP MMOs. The biggest plus is that the player base is quite helpful and friendly. There are a lot fewer kids that play than most MMOs (percentage-wise) so thats quite nice.

I had a lot of fun playing Allods Online. It is a Russian game that recently opened up servers in the states. Its WoWish but not really so much a WoW clone. If anything I find it more similar to EQ2. I like the skill tree system, and they dont split up their player base. You can play and enjoy the full game without paying a dime, at least that was the case when I played. The only reason I didnt stick with it is because I dont want to get too invested in any game before The Old Republic comes out.

Im not hearing any of this EA hate. They are a monster company that has to make huge important decisions all the time, and must place the importance of pleasing their investors above all else. Of course they are going to regularly piss people off. Thats how the real world works. Try dealing with a company like Turbine which is just as greedy, but also poor, understaffed and completely incompetent.

You said no WoW, so I'll say Rift. It's not WoW but it's really close. It's fantasy settings, a lot of the mechanics work similarly, and the main difference is the class system. I've only played the trial, but it looks fun enough, if I hadn't already played WoW for 5 years or so.

Guild Wars 1 is a nice game, it's not free-to-play per se, since you have to buy the box, but there's no subscription and you can get all four campaigns for $40-$60 USD (total).

Vindictus is fun, very action-oriented (though sometimes really overblown and campy when its trying to be serious), it has a unique and fascinating combat system.

Rusty Hearts is very much like Vindictus, but with a more anime style and different voicing options. Crazy fun a la Kingdom Hearts, but with a lot of the same drawbacks.

Dragon Nest is another twitchy action MMO... I don't know that much about it, but what I do know makes me consider Vindictus and Rusty Hearts to be better games. Maybe it'll appeal to you more than it did to me.

League of Legends is available. I assume you've heard of it. Not an MMO exactly, but a lot of fun.

World of Tanks is an awesome free-to-play about driving and shooting at tanks. Not really fantasy setting, but hey... you drive and shoot at tanks. Doesn't get much better than that. heh.

Firefall is an extremely fun-looking "MMOFPS"-type game (with jetpacks!). It's free to play and the open beta is available now. Again, not really fantasy setting (more sci-fi fantasy, far less realistic than World of Tanks), but it's really unique.

The real pot of gold, so to speak, is Guild Wars 2. Like GW1 it has no subscription, but you have to buy the box. It shakes up most of the MMO conventions and creates a fascinating hybrid between WoW style hotkeys, Vindictus style action and pacing, TOR style storytelling and atmosphere, dynamic content similar to but far deeper than Rift, all with Guild Wars flair and mirror polish. But that one doesn't have a release date yet and open beta won't be announced until the end of closed beta this year... so it'll be awhile before you can play it.
