Trying to find something high quality that would be up my alley, perhaps a JRPG? I don't have any friends who might recommend those to me, so I'm out of the loop. I'd take an action/adventure game or an FPS if it fits my criteria, too. PS3 and PC are my gaming rigs of choice.

So let's say the most important thing to me in a game is the cast of characters I'm surrounded by. I want them to: be 3-dimensional and fleshed out, contribute meaningfully to the plot, have some interesting conflicts going on, develop over the course of the story, be funny and likeable and bad-ass, and most importantly, be original.

My fav. video game character of all time is ME's Mordin Solus. Mordin is an eccentric genius scientist, bad-ass intergalactic spy, and a talented singer who's overcome with massive guilt over his role in the Genophage, which only intensifies over the course of the games, until he's forced to do something very plotical and very meaningful about it. (Never mind that he's an alien.) And that only scratches the surface of who he is. So, ideally, your suggestion will include a character or two who take at least half as many words to describe as Mordin did. Great voice acting is a huge plus!

The newest JRPG I've even looked at would have to be... ...yeah, it's been a while. Basically anything from the PS3 era will be new to me, as might some older things, too. Some other games I've enjoyed for their characters are LA Noire and Red Dead Redemption, though they rarely stick with a single NPC long enough to really flesh them out past archetypes of a certain culture and time.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be extremely grateful.

Planescape: Torment. The characters don't develop over the course of the game but you do find out more and more about who they really are. Voice acting would only distract from the depth of the game. The best story in an RPG.

Anachronox is kind of a JRPG, I guess, lets just say that some of the party characters are a bitter secretary trapped in a PDA, a grumpy 71 year old museum curator, a miniature planet, and an alcoholic washed up comic superhero.

Both are available at GOG.

Of course you should also play Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, available on Steam.

what era exactly are you looking for?

octafish made some good suggestions, although pretty damn old depending on your "standards" so they might not be the best suggestions.

if i were to say something for pc that might not be too old, would be neverwinter nights 1 and/or 2, there are a treasure chest full of mods online that make these games both even more amazing than they already are, and are good wrpg's to boot that have a good balance between being, old, but not too old.

otherwise for jrpg i'd suggest downloading persona 3 off the psn store, it's cheap and amazing, hell take your pick on ff7 or ff9 on the psn store as well.

for ps3 jrpg's, i'm not too experienced besides that..so can't quite recommend.

Sounds like The Witcher 2 would be right up your alley. It has a great cast of multi-faceted characters, connected in a dangerous web of political intrigue. It poses you with complex choices, unburdened by a "morality meter" and with tangible consequences that aren't always what you expect.

Have a stirring trailer [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwvthOy9jlI]. It makes the plot seem quite formulaic, but I assure you it's not. As you delve further you'll find yourself constantly doubting your decisions, and the motivations of the characters you ally yourself with or condemn.

And I second octafish's recommendation of PS:T and VTMB.

I played PST and loved it. Couldn't get into VTM, but if it comes down to it, I'll give it another shot, thanks.

Well, ideally there'd be 500 games to pick from, all brand spanking new with great graphics and sound quality and... and... yeah, that's probably just not likely. So I'm open to anything.

I recently got Baldur's Gate 2, but I haven't cracked it open yet. Is that better or worse? And yeah, I've heard good things about the Persona series, I'll keep an eye out for that one.

No need for stirring trailers. This game is already at the very top of my list. :) But I'm glad to hear from someone who's played it that it has everything I want. Just gotta find a store that has it...

Already played it. :D It was great. Thanks, anyway.

For PS3, i would recommend Folklore. Its a bit slow to start, but a good rpg. The environments are fun to explore and its reasonably cheap now as it was a Launch title for the ps3. White Knight Chronicles 2 is also good, and for the price you also get a free copy of WKC1. I enjoyed the Star Ocean released for the ps3 as well.

For PC, there are quite a few. Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 are well done, and fun to play. Freelancer is a Space open flight RPG with a crap ton of mods and a rather lively community. Jedi academy is fun, and still probably the best lightsaber combat game. It really depends on what you are looking for. The Last Remnant is good so far, i have only played about 3 hours or so as my game library is backing up. But its a good game. It also depends on how powerful your pc is. Certain games need to look good as well, like the Witcher and Witcher 2. If you have em on low settings, alot of the games allure gets lost rather quickly. Hope i helped

well if you loved PST, then you will love baldurs gate 2 (stories are different obviously, but they use same mechanics and are from same era, i'd say it might be better...ALTHOUGH they are coming out with a baldurs gate "enhanced edition" soon in the future (the escapist had an article or two on it if your interested) so sad to say you already bought it...maybe wait for the enhanced edition and shell out another 10-20 bucks for the better version of it?

i only played about 8 hours of BG2, as my computer crashed while playing it one time and i backed up from a week ago before it so i lost all the files and so i didn't care to re install and try again :/ so can't comment on the rest of the game too much. I also saw you are looking into witcher 2, and let me tell you, that game is bloody amazing (there are some dry parts, mind you, so don't go around thinking every step is going to be oozing with orgasmic paced fun) but it is definitely a great rpg

Can't believe no one has mentioned Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3, one of the best JRPG's I've ever played. Also been playing Tales of Graces f whenever I've had the chnce recently, you should look in that too.

Can't recommend P3 or P4 enough, and you can get P# on PSN for a good price. Also, there are a number of great classics on PSN, such as Xenogears and Vagrant Story, that Id recommend.

Persona 3 and 4. Always Persona. As said, P3:FES is on PSN now.

I don't have a PS3, but I'm sure the Disgaea games are good if you're fine with isometric turn based strategy RPG. I'm not sure how much of the older games you have to play to understand them though.

If you liked PS:T then try the other Black Isle and Troika(same people) games, Fallout 1&2 and Arcanum. They are really great games.

If you liked Deus Ex HR you should check out Alpha Protocol. It has similar gameplay (stealth shooter, albeit 3rd person) and an impressive choice and consequence system. Patches have dealt with the bugs mostly so there is no reason anymore to not try it :)

Vampire Bloodlines if you can find it. Depends on your age, it's rather dark.

You didn't like them? I absolutely loved the Purity First one.

OT: Check out the Baldur's Gate games, with our without the upcoming enhanced edition that's being made, I'd recommend without though, Baldur's Gate 2 in its original form is a thing of beauty more than ten years on, in my extremely biased opinion.

Seeing as how you have a PS3, you can download Final Fantasy IX from the Playstation Network. Best JRPG I've ever played in my opinion.

I can't recommend this game enough. I love it.

It's really more of a turn based strategy game than a JRPG in my opinion, but I still recommend Valkyria Chronicles as well.

Well this might be out there but star craft 2 had some real interesting RPG elements fitted into an RTS. I thought the story line was entertaining and built with great characters.
