I do agree with you on the Laputa idea. However, I think Totoro is not the best idea. The main characters are a little too young for an older audience to relate to sometimes, and some of the character designs can be a little strange (Catbus anyone?). Don't get me wrong, I love Totoro, but I think there are better choices.

I hardly think Kiki's Delivery Service is 'girly'. The setting and characters are easy to relate to for any gender. And I think you may be writing off Spirited Away too quickly. Yes, the mud monster can be a little evocative of tentacles, but it also won an Oscar. I find that this makes it an easier sell to someone who is not interested in watching anime.

Also how is Grave of the Fireflies ethnocentric? Ethnocentrism is the belief that your culture is better than other people's cultures. Do you mean that Grave focuses too much on Japanese culture?

Wait wait wait, you mother told you off about WORKING!!? What the hell did she find offensive?

Anyway, there's millions of anime that are not about tentacle rape. Hell, even current adult anime isn't about tentacle rape, that's sooooo 1995 :p I'll second the recommendations for Monster, but here's a few:

Victorian Romance Emma - It's pretty much Jane Austin, a young maid and the son of a noble fall in love. Forbidden romance due to class differences ensues.

Bartender - It's about a talented bartender who helps his customers with their problems by recommending them a particular cocktail and explains the history of said cocktail and why it relates to them.

Usagi Drop - The story of a 30-something year old bachelor who adopts his grandfather's illegitimate child and discovers the difficulties of parenthood.

We Still Don`t Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day - The story of a group of people who used to be very close friends when they were young. They've changed and grown apart as the years have gone by, but they recently got together again to honor the memory of one of them who passed away.

Kino's Journey - The story of Kino, a traveler who journeys from country to country, staying for three days before moving on again. A story of culture, society and humanity, the good as well as the bad.

Ristorante Paradiso - The story of a small restaurant in Rome, where the newest staff member has come to Rome with the intent of confronting her mother who abandoned her as a child in order to marry her new boyfriend.

Hataraki-Man - The story of a 28-year old workaholic magazine editor and her uneasy relationship with her equally workaholic boyfriend.

It's sad that no one mentioned the boxing anime Hajime no Ippo...
I hear it's great, but I'm skeptical about sports anime as a rule. How is it in terms of appeal to an audience who isn't into boxing or sports in general?
Really well actually, I love Hajime no Ippo despite a lack of interest in boxing. What the series does well is breaking down the basics of boxing so people who know nothing about it can understand, and it does it with a great cast of characters and lots of humor.
