Would Naoko Uehashi be your thing? She's written the Kemono No Souja (The Beast Player) books and the Moribito series, both of which are avaliable as manga.

They're Japanese fantasy books. Perhaps you'd like to check them out to see if you like them?
I took a look, but they don't seem like my thing. I have extremely little interest in fantasy. Sorry, mate :/

I bought it years ago. Didn't finish it then, but it was good enough that I'll probably give it another go someday. I read another book by that writer called Real World. Loved it.

I've enjoyed the Vampire Hunter D novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi but know they are not for everyone.

I also really liked The Inugami Clan by Seishi Yokomizo. Sadly it's the only one of his Kindaichi Kosuke detective novels to be translated into English :(

Captcha: Problem Solver. Glad to be of assistance :)

The Vampire D books probably aren't my thing, but the library's got them so I might as well give one a look.

I'll read The Inugami Clan if it ever turns up in a library or becomes available at a reasonable price. It can't be any worse than that awful, awful manga The Kindaichi Case Files.

I am guessing you read Musashi (haha, tried to autocorrect to "mushiness") already.

The other good book I have read that takes place in Japan is Shogun by James Clavell, but I don't know if that fits your criteria.
That's the one! I want to read more, but the only one I could find was Musahsi, and that one's extremely rare in Sweden. It was incredibly lucky that my local library had it.

Shusaku Endo (author of "Silence") and Edogawa Rampo (horror writer). Both very good.

EDIT: Also Yukio Mishima.
I read a play by Mishima once. Didn't suck. I'll take a look at the other two.
