Kirkman's Irredeemable Ant-Man is a brilliant mini series. Cosmic Marvel's Annihilation is a fucking awesome event that they published about 6 years ago which surprisingly requires 0 knowledge of the cosmic-side of the Marvel Universe to understand and enjoy.
I liked Irredeemable Ant-Man and Annihilation is on my personal top 100 greatest comcis list. It is the most awesome sf comic I've ever read.

I've always been a fan of the Battle Angel series, and the Last Order follow-up becomes it's own awesome story.
The animated series of The Maxx got me into collecting comics. I had been aware of and sometimes bought comics beforehand, but that's when I finally stopped just browsing my friend's collections and started actually caring.
I really like Battle Angel Alita, but the Last ORder series wasn't as good if you ask me, though still worth reading. Iäve been curious about The Maxx for a while.
Its so rare to find someone else who has read it! Its one of my favorite comic stories of all time. Has my #1 coolest fatality in comic book history:

And this awesome moment:

Not sure about comics, but I know of one manga that's pretty obscure, but I love it. It's called Franken Furan (Fran).

Warning though, only read it if you can handle gore and EXTREMELY dark humor.

The basic premise is this: Fran is a sort of super-amazing teenage surgeon girl. So amazing, in fact, that her operations are nothing short of miracles... or slaps in the face of God. Depends on your perspective.

Each story usually begins with Fran being presented with some sort of opportunity to use her amazing talents. But... things never go quite right. Oh, the operations are successful... but the patients usually get MORE than they bargained for.

For example, in one story, she finds a girl who's just been gravely injured. She saves her life, but... well...

WARNING, SPOILED FOR "OH MY GOD"

So, yeah, if you looked at that, you've got a pretty good idea what this manga's about. Highly recommended, if you're into this sort of thing.
WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?

HOW THE FUCK IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE!?

AND THAT GOES AGAINST ALL SCIENTIFIC ETHICAL RESTRAINTS
I agree with that bar the ethics part. She saved her life, beggars can't be choosers.

But surely it would be easier to, you know, make a human body? Given the species difference and lack of suitable comparisons, unless Australia has something like that in that size, which wouldn't surprise me to be honest.

I agree with #2, but #1... While it's a cool scene and all, I really like the character who got killed (and whose name I won't mention for people who haven't read it yet).

Well he got what always wanted out of the deal... until he was resurrected against his will later on. I thought it was a cool development for the character and knew he wouldn't be dead long... he's one of those unkillable villains after all.

Yeah, I know. I guess I just always prefer to see him kicking keester than egtting his keester kicked. But like you say, that's why it's a good scene - he gets what he wants.

He wants death so he can be with the one he loves. He's the original emo... oh wait, that's Silver Surfer. Stan Lee was very introspective at the end of the Silver Age :p

All the comics I read are mainstream (Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, derp), so I'll just stick with manga.
I assume you're looking for seinen/shounen.
Well then, I recommend Gangsta.
God, I love that manga. Great art, great characters, fantastic action.

Dendrobates and Btooom! are personal favorites as well (though the latter isn't obscure by any definition of the word).

Oh and if you're cool with Korean webcomics, A Fairytale for the Demon Lord is a good read as well.

Ethical restraints? Ha, you have NO idea. Fran doesn't have a "Hippocratic Oath" so much as a "Hippocratic Loose Guidelines".

And THIS is one of the milder stories. No, seriously, this is only like the second story in the series. I specifically chose that picture simply because most examples I could think of off the top of my head, I can't actually post on this site without a ban-hammer.

I'd say the original emo was Batman.
[small]Oh yes I went there.[/small]

And it's funny, because it just struck me that while I knew that he wanted death, it's not until we discussed it here that I realized that this fact turns the scene you linked into a victory for him! It just got even more awesome!

Like how... Better not spoil it for those who haven't read it
Galactus being caught made the bad guys seem more powerful. In the hadns of a lesser-writer, it just would have made the readers go "Oh, so Galactus is weaker than usual in this story. Here, it didn't make him look weak, it just made Annihilus and pals seem extra powerful.

I agree, though I was kind of disappointed that the two Galactus-level beings were taken out so soon after the series ended. My favorite part of the whole thing was probably Super-Skrull and Ronan teaming up to retake Hala.

It becomes less of a story about Alita and more about the entire world, so I don't blame anyone for not digging it as much as the original. But for me the entire narrative opens up to cover the entire world inside this story, and some of the martial arts techniques they discuss has actually helped my own training! Not that I have a robot body though.

I've got very broad tastes comic-wise, so I have no real preferences. Just make sure it's not an average shonen and I'll like it.
Hmmm, ok these two aren't so much 'obscure/abstract', but they are nice 'alternatives':

REAL [//www.mangareader.net/real] (drawn by Takehido Inoue of Slam Dunk and Vagabond fame) a wheelchair basketball manga - the first manga I've seen that treats disability in a mature and inspirational way, both as a boost for the maligned disabled audience and in teaching others about what's it's like to live with a disability (the guy's done his homework). Also kinda appropriate with the (Para)Olympics just around the corner.

The Boys [//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boys_(comics)]; my current go-to favourite western comic. Premise: superheroes are scum (with a few exceptions) - they're corporate-sponsored rapists, murderers, pedophiles, sociopaths and psychopaths and it's up to a CIA-backed (in shaky fashion) group of oddballs with plenty of personal baggage (come on, it wouldn't be a comic without compulsory back-story padding) to curtail these 'icons' of justice.

Oh, and for what it's worth, BPRD has my full backing too; an excellent series.

I'm not sure if these two mangas are obscure or if they just have a dedicated fanbase but I recommend Toriko and Count Cain.

Toriko is about a Gourmet Hunter who tracks down rare foods in order to make the ultimate dish. I've read only a few chapters so far but it's very good. Kind of silly though and you may not want to read on an empty stomach.

Count Cain is a historical manga about the heir of a wealthy family who is trying to find out more about the secret of his birth. I'll warn you ahead of time and say that this manga is Shounen-ai and has mentions of squicky subject manner. If I tell you about the squick then it would kind of ruin the surprise and I don't know how to put spoiler tags. So if you can get around the gay subtext it is a good manga.
