Well for the X-Box I can heartilly recommend Crimson Skies, in Canada it's $2 at most places for a game that was well worth its full value.

For the PS2 oh lets see
Easy to Find:
-Final Fantasy X and to a lesser degree X-2, not a brilliant plot but it's fun.
-Final Fantasy XII
-Xenosaga III, 1 was okay, 2 is best adressed by reading up on it online or using 3's in game summary but in 3 the game really shines, you get a well thought up battle system, a fairly cool story and some of the greatest boss battles ever fought in an RPG.
-Beyond Good and Evil
-Resident Evil 4, good for the PS2, better for the Wii, but you said last gen.
-MGS 3, great game that I still play religiously.
-Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, an underapreciated sequel that tried to do something different and managed to tell a compelling and dark story.
-Persona 3, 60+ Hours of serious fun! I never thought I would enjoy a dungeon crawler but Persona provides an uncomplicated experience that proves extremely addictive. Basically the game is Social Interaction + Dungeon Crawl + Story with no frills to get in the way of that experience.

Games you may never be able to find:

- Digital Devil Saga 2, one, while interesting, has very long dungeons with very little story pay off, 2 balances this formula better.
- Suikodens 3 and 5, my 3rd and 2nd most favorite entries in the series, both play well and have great stories.
- ZOE2: Best Mecha Action Ever!

In my opinion, the Tekken series is the all-time champion of entertainment value for the PS2. Unfortunately, I was only allowed to have a PC if I could put it together myself and one console when I was younger so I chose the PS and the PS2, so I'm what you might call a fan-boy.

I also enjoyed the GTA series, God of War (1 and 2), the Hitman series, Twisted Metal: Black, Total Overdose, Flatout (1 and 2) and Broken Sword.

for ps2:

- metal gear solid 2 and 3. stealth based gameplay that gives you plenty of original and funny ways of getting past gaurds. the story is full of crazy and over the top characters and twists, and is incredibly detailed. a lot of people don't like it because there is a lot of dialogue and cut scenes to sit through but personaly i think they are probably the 2 best games on the ps2. try and play the first one for ps1 or the gamecube remake first. the story will make more sense.

- max payne 1 and 2. noir style third person shooter with a great story.

- jak and daxter, jak 2 and jak 3. platformers. better than ratchet and clank i think.

- conflict: desert storm 1 + 2. best squad controls around, imo, because you can switch between members of your squad whenever you like and your teammates don't go wandering off getting shot, as is the style with most sqaud AI these days. they just stay put and shoot bad guys untill you bark orders at them. great fun on both co-op and single player. AVOID conflict: vietnam and global storm. they're an insult to the first two games.

- mercenaries. it's a bit like gta but set in north korea and with more air strikes and helicopter gunships at your disposal.

- timesplitters 1 & 2. cartoonish fps. it's about time traveling so the levels are really varied. single player and multiplayer are both really fast paced and full of imaginative chaacters and settings. timesplitters 3 isn't as good in my opinion becasue it puts too much
emphasis on the not very good story.

- resident evil 4. not very scary but a great third person shooter. the gamecube version has slightly better graphics but the ps2 version has "seperate ways" where you get to play five levels as ada. it might sound like a bit of a cheap gimmick to make people buy the ps2 port, but it's actualy just as good, if not better than the main game.

- red faction 1 and 2. fps

- mashed. micro machines style racer which is insanely fun on multiplayer but apparently not that good on single player.

- socom: combined assault. round-based online shooter that's sort of like counter strike but with more emphasis on stealth and tactics. don't bother unless you've got ps2 online though because the single player isn't that great.

games i haven't played but have heard are very good: killer 7, project zero, okami.

Lets see..

A list of essencial from last gen. (acording to me...) this is proabably gonna contain some games mentioned by others, but I didnt quite have the patience of reading all the other posts, so...

For the PS2:

Grand Theft Auto series
Metal Gear Solid series (easy to find especially now that they are selling all 3 in 1 bundle, pretty good deal)
Shin Megami Tensei series (especially Nocturne and Persona 3, but just an FYI they might be a little hard to find for a resonable price)
Okami (saw it metioned aready but I thougth it deserved to be on the list anyways)
Devil May Cry 3
Ico and Shadow of Collosus
God of War I & II (they are fun but a little too cinematic...i.e. camara is such that you got no control over it and it kind of forces you to see only what it wants its to...)
Dragon Quest VIII
Dark Cloud 2 (aka Dark Chronicles)
Disgea (and any other Nippon Ichi titles you can find, they are great SRPG)

Gamecube (not too many title for this one)

Killer 7 (diffrent then most games...it has had a "love it" or "hate it" relationship with most gaming crowds)
Resident Evil 4
Paper Mario and the thousand year old door (fun game with a bit of narcissistic humor mixed it)
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Battalion Wars (a spinoff of Advance Wars)
Metroid Prime series
Ikaruga (might be a little hard, in both difficulty and abillity to find)

Xbox

Halo (I know everyone and their dog likes to bash this game on forum, but I thought is a pretty good, it was the game that turned me to console gaming)
Beyond Good and Evil
Prince of Persia Sands of Time (the rest of the trilogy is pretty good too but it does compare to the first one)
Splinter Cell
Max Payne series (buy it for the console only if you dont have a PC)
Scrapland (kind of underated game)
Psychonauts
Jade Empire (and if you like Star Wars, unlike me, you might also wanna check out Knights of the Old Republic)
Fable

I guess that's all I can think of for now...

indecisivegamer halo is regarded as the best console shooter. If the OP plays comp shooters then no doubt he will probably dislike halo.
Its true that i am a bit of an FPS nut on the PC and my impression of Halo is largely bad. I tried Halo on the PC and it was ok.

However i had not considered the COOP aspect. I can probably borrow it off someone and i will give it a go.

Also thanks again to everyone who gave the time to suggest some titles i is much appreciated. :)

Agreed, I've always been a PC shooter at heart and my first time trying Halo was a bad one. It felt like it lacked something. I loved the atmosphere and the art, very unique stuff, but story and gameplay-wise it was nothing new and just felt like a chore.

Ive felt the same way for every Halo's single player. Bad storylines, uninteresting characters, and repetitive. The only thing I've every liked in Halo is Halo 3's multiplayer and Halo 1's "unique" art.

also, my recommendations:

PS2: Shadow of the Colossus
Any Metal Gear Solid game

Gamecube: Super Smash Bros Melee

Xbox: .....never owned one, so I cant really recommend anything. Just sell it and use the money to buy games for the other two consoles :)
