So I just bought a 3DS recently so I've missed out on a lot I think. Recommend me some stuff to check out! I've only got Bravely Default, Xenoblade Chronicles and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. Even recommend me some stuff off of the virtual console. I'm already eyeing up some old favorites like Oracle of Ages/Seasons and Metroid Fusion. But yeah, go hard on the suggestions or whatever :)

If you want a challenge, go for Atlus' games. Shin Megami Tensei 4, Strange Journey, the Devil Survivor series, and Persona Q.

Hmm I was kind of hoping for a more varied list. I've looked into a lot of those games and I dunno, they don't seem up my alley. The Shin Megami Tensei series doesn't seem like my kind of game. Oh well, thanks for the hints. I'm going to try and find Tales of the Abyss for sure.

Pokémon Shuffle was fun.
Starfox 64 3D was a decent port.
Fantasy Life was grind-y, but I enjoy that at times.
Pilotwings 3D was relaxing and very cheap.

Something different? Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
Something really old? Metroid II
A not so known JRPG? Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan
Something obvious? Super Mario Land 3D
Something indie? Shovel Knight or The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Fire Emblem is essential! And all of the Zeldas are great, of course (ALBW just got released for cheap as part of the Select range).
Mario 3D Land is very safe but brilliantly made and can be found quite cheap.

If it says Zelda, give it a shot. They remakes of the two N64 games do change some things, but ignore those if you never cared for them. Majora's Mask 3D is great and did make some things easier for newbies, but I think they made some other minor things harder. A Link Between Worlds is something every 3DS owner should try.

Shantae and the Pirates Curse - like Zelda, only as a sidescroller (Metroidvania, but with dungeons). It's one of the best titles on the eshop.

Luigi's Mansion 2/Dark Moon - ghost busting on the go. Unlike the Gamecube title, Mooning the Darkness is broken up into missions to make it easier to pick up and put down with long breaks in between.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is almost the only game you'll ever need.

If you've never played them, the DS Castlevanias are pretty sweet too.

The Professor Layton series is a pretty good. They're basically visual novels with logic puzzles and great stories. There are two on 3DS but if you can get the DS entries (particularly the first three), I can't recommend these games highly enough. Aside from that, the Inazuma Eleven series is also very good.

Other than that, I think you can still download the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire demo for some extra goodies to transfer to your Alpha Sapphire copy... :p

My roomie bought that game. He didn't play any other game for two months afterwards. It soaked up a truly impressive amount of his time. If you want a game that you can play for a long time then this is it.

It's already been said, but Fire Emblem. Easily one of my favourite games ever. The central story is a bit of a mess, but the characters and combat are great. I also tried the demo for Etrian Untold recently, and enjoyed that. Standard RPG stuff, but the difficulty is hardcore. Monster Hunter 4 can be daunting and often frustrating, but ultimately it's very compelling once you find a weapon you're comfortable with. There's also Smash, of course, and for something completely different, look up Project Mirai DX.

Travelling a lot, an waiting a lot, I spend a lot of time with my Nintendo hand held. In no particular order:

Smash Bros is probably obvious. You're not really missing anything if your 3ds doesn't support amiibos. Mine does being a new nintendo 3ds xl. I have amiibos for the hell of it more than anything.

Tomodachi Life is a neat little diversion.

Scribblenauts in general is nice, though the game seems to lack the power to let you make your own maxwell for some reason.

A little more in the family of intellectual stimulation is Art Academy: First Semester which is about as clear cut of a title you could want.
Brain Age express is some good mental exercise.

Being free unless you want to spend money, pokemon Shuffle, and Pokemon Rumble World are ok.

Pokemon Battle Trozei is not too bad.

Pokemon OR/AS, and Y/Z are hard to go wrong with, though pokemon Z is coming out. t depends on if you'd rather wait on it.

Project X zone is a bit of a slog with an almost guaranteed 2 stage battle, but all the wonderful characters coming together and the craziness of seeing 5 of them wail on an enemy at the same time is nice, IMO.

Fire Emblem Awakening deserves mention. It's a great series in general.

Senran Kagura Burst, and Senran Kagura Burst 2: Deep Crimson both deserve some attention, imo. Great brawlers.

Samurai Warriors Chronicles, and Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 are some I recommend.

Lego Batman 3 is a fun game.

Rune Factory 4 is a solid top down RPG with a lot of heart.

Fantasy Life is not bat at all.

Shantae and the pirate's curse is an awesome platformer.

Out of left field is Style Savvy: Trendsetters! What ever you might think of putting together outfits, there's a strong satisfaction in pleasing customers.

Starship Defense is a neat tower defense game on the cheap.

Are you a fan of Battleship? Radar Mission takes the game to new areas.

Kersploosh is a neat game where you take up the role of an object thrown down a well, and have to dodge obstacles to see the bottom of the well.

Demon Box King reminds me of Makai Kingdom plot/characterwise, but it's a lane combat game where you send units along lanes to do combat with enemy units.

Don't be afraid to use the backwards compatibility. Final Fantasy tactics a2, Sims pets, Pokemon Conquest (though having to go through the side stories to get to a more free play sort of thing sucks.), Civilizations, etc. can make for an interesting time.

What I wish i could do is recommend a game in the style of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but what they released was Japan only. :/

Hit up every Demo you can. You never know!

Also, look up how to format large Micro SD cards for your 3ds! The space will come in handy, and do it before you invest too much in your current one!

I'm just going to point out that Yokai Watch drops this week, and also mention that it's doing its darnedest to supplant Pokemon in Japan. Just food for thought...
