It's just a recommendation, chill. I didn't like SAO as well, but it's my opinion. The OP may very well like it. And VanQQisH already addressed the English dub thing, so there's nothing to be said here.

Don't worry, it'll take a lot more than that to have me take something personally. It's the internet after all. And I do agree that there was a lot of wasted potential in SAO. Namely, the 25 floors after the Skull Reaper boss and the fact that the author never explored The Laughing Coffin within SAO itself.

I would have loved to read more about the crusade the players took against them. Have you read the novels? Volume 5-6 are set in a new MMO, Gun Gale Online and while it's slower to start it has one of the best female lead characters I've ever seen and is quite a good read.

And if you haven't watched/read Accel World, I recommend you check that out too. It's by the same author and set about 20 years after the day the SAO death game ended. Also has an excellent female lead character in Kuroyukihime, who while a bit a of a pretentious teen, is still way better than the Mary Sue, Asuna.

Accel World is seconded. I started Accel World (the anime) and loved it for the short time that I watched it. I don't know why it put it down though, guess Akira distracted me at that time. :-/

I might do, but at the moment I'm hunting out stuff I can over analyse like Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell

Actually just had a really subjectively good time with a VN called Saya no Uta.

If you have any recommendations along those lines I'd appreciate it.

Calling someone a "Buyfag" doesn't really give off a mood of playfulness or of being chill.

I said "Otaku Buyfag Master Race". Buyfag is used to describe people who buy merch for their various Japanese culture interests. It is called as such among a lot of Otaku communities. The "fag" comes from how baffling it is as a hobby; you have to wait 6 months sometimes, its expensive and you normally can't inspect the merch before you buy.

And before I'm accused of being homophobic

Oh, Saya no Uta. A good read that one, if a bit unique. Honestly, there's not a whole lot out there that's quite like it and that's why it's so special and so loved. Some recommendations outside the same twelve shows recommended here all the time, I can do for you.

In terms of anime:
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - Please analyze this for me. If you can figure out what the hell it's about please let me know.
.Hack//Sign - Awful animation and production values and terrible pacing but a really good look at child abuse and how they escape from a harsh reality.
Denpa Teki na Kanojo - Watch this. This show is excellent and outstanding in every way possible, an absolute must-watch in my opinion.
Eve no Jikan Gekijouban - See above.
Mardock Scramble - Also see above.
Fate/Zero - This is the Nasuverse done right. Try your best to track down the BD subs for this if you can, it's simply stunning both visually and storywise.
Kara no Kyoukai - More excellent Nasuverse stuff.
Golden Boy - No need to analyze this. It speaks for itself.
Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari - Tenchi Muyo spinoff that's set in another world as the title implies. Yeah, this is a harem but it's great when a harem lead is not afraid of his own cock, he just has better things to do. Kinda gotta watch it to understand.
Mouretsu Kaizoku - Also known as Bodacious Space Pirates. Don't expect One Piece, it's a show about strong and cute female characters and politics and insurance fraud. And a whole lot of Space Ship porn on the side. The soundtrack is also absolutely lovely.
Nazo no Kanojo X - It's honestly as weird as it sounds but it's a lovely story that's one of my all time favorites.
Shiki - Slow starter but an excellent vampire horror story set in modern Japan.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya - Yeah, it sucks that the TV show has such an awful fanbase and the Endless Eight sucked too but this movie is an objective masterpiece. And I do not use that term lightly. Make Sure you watch at least episode 1-5 in chronological order, Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody and at least the first two and last episode of Endless Eight for maximum effect. This is a movie that actually managed to turn 5 minutes of deep introspection into one of the most tense and watchable scenes of all time.
Tasogare Otome X Amnesia - This is a pretty cool and interesting specimen. It's more or less a horror/romance story for girls but is extremely enjoyable nonetheless.

More VNs you may like:

This post is getting a bit long and there's plenty there I think is worth a good watch that few people seem to know about. Feel free to PM me anytime regarding this kinda stuff. I love to share.

It's actually a joke from another website. We pretty much confirmed each other as being able to get the joke in our first few posts to each other. Nothing insulting about the term 'buyfag' because I am one. It's honestly more insulting that he used the word 'otaku' to refer to me.

Personally, I despise Anime. I see it as inacessible and lazy. I've tried to get into it a few times, but as an English Student in the UK, I think western narrative structure is too ingrained in me.

But...

A good friend of mine got me watching Cowboy Bobop a few days ago. Im hooked. Its the soundtrack that makes it.

It was just as much of a dig at the guy with Reimu Hakurei holding Flandre Scarlet as his avatar. But look at that guy; isn't he simply amazing? Otaku master race, come at me bro!

As far as TMOHS... yeah the fan base is terrible but I still liked the show. You have to watch endless for Disappearance to have full impact.

Because Yuki was still aware of the passage of time outside of the time loop

I'm a sucker for a good dandere.

Shit, umm...

I'm gonna 4th Tizzy by also recommending Durarara!! It's certainly my favorite anime. And screw everyone who says that the show turns terrible after the halfway point. I thought it got better.

Steins;Gate is great if want a nice sci-fi time travel story. I'm only at episode 10 but I already say that you should watch it.

Gurren Lagann for the explosion porn and over-the-top antics.

Nichijou for being kind of a sketch comedy show. There is no dub, but this show is meant to be watched in it's native language.

Angel Beats for being an action/comedy series with some heart breaking scenes.

Baccano! for being 16 episodes of cohesive narrative and being fucking awesome in general.

Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt for being... like a Saturday morning cartoon. Except with sex. I can't really explain it all that well. Just watch this clip.

(The show is dubbed; I just couldn't find a good quality version of this scene without censor bleeps.)

I hope this helped in some way. Although many of my suggestions don't really fall into your category, they should all be worth a watch.

I really don't aye
The whole of High School of the Dead is supposed to be excess though. You don't think they put those scenes in with a straight face, do you? It's part of the joke. It's the same reason why you have high schoolers knock zombies into the air, and girls turn into kendo helicopters.

I was less insulted by the fanservice in HotD than I was by the harem aspect of Sword Art Online, since it seems to play it totally straight.

However, beware; Eden of the East focuses a bit too much on what it likes to refer to as "Johnies". I'll let you imagine what those are.
Never heard of the show, but here in England, 'Johnny' is a slang word for a condom.

Is that it?
I'll answer your question with another question;

What body part is a (normal) condom used on?
Oh.

OHHHHHH!

Another recommendation thread...well this time I'll put something less well known and not posted yet:

Genshiken - A simple slice of life show about a group of students involved in the anime/manga society at university. One of the best things about this show is that it's got heart, and all the characters are well realised. There's a good amount of humour here, but all character interactions and plots are played out realistically and seriously - the show deals with hardships that come with otaku relationships, the mindsets of the less socially adept, and the transition from less than ambitious students to working adults. These are topics that hit very close to home for fans of anime/manga, but Genshiken not only handles them respectfully, but in a way that by the end you are left feeling touched.

So stop on by the Genshiken club, you won't regret it.

One anime that I noticed hasn't been mentioned is Bakemonogatari, great dialogue and art style. I think I have watched it through 3 times now.

(Ahh! Not another one of these thread! The anime database should still be somewhere in the archive! If not, than there should be twenty of these exact same thread!)

That said. Squid Girl. If you've seen it before, see it again. If you haven't seen it at all, see it three times to make up for it. The world begins and ends with Squid Girl.
I don't even know what that's suppose to mean, just Squid Girl!

Gimmie some idea of where to start OP. What are your favourite genres? What Western movies/TV shows do you like?
