I'm currently not a massive black metal listener but I'm intrigued and I would like you guys to hit me with some of your favourite black metal songs. Preferably the second wave stuff from Scandinavia & other areas

I'm currently a big fan of Dimmu Borgir, but that's the only black metal band I like. So what do you guys like?

Can't get more true, and I'm in no way connected to that band at all!

I'm sorry if I just wasted five minutes of your life.

Darkthrone's "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" is the defining second-wave black metal album as far as I'm concerned, both critically and commercially. Go there first. If you're used to the very polished, pristine sound of Dimmu Borgir though, it's going to be quite a change.

Death metal is not black metal.

Well Nuclear Blast has a few black metal bands that are fairly good.
These include Dimmu, Behemoth, Immortal etc.

Just look at one of their vids on youtube and then follow recomendations. There are alot outthere.

Some others that sometimes are considered black metal:
Cradle of Filth
Moonspell

Thats all I can think of off hand. And to be honest I don't really think that they are but eh.
You may like them..

I'm going to give you a list of obscure/lesser-known black metal bands, and bands that continually twist and distort the definitions of (orthodox) black metal:

Klabautamann - progressive black metal with folk, my favourite band together with Valborg, Ekpyrosis and other Zeitgeister Music bands
Valborg - mix of black/doom/death/gothic metal; really weird stuff, cannot be placed in any known subgenre - which is why I like it so much!
Ekpyrosis - avant-garde black metal, it's hard to describe; basic yet complex.
Urfaust - black metal, unorthodox as hell yet still black metal through and through, you'll have to get used to the vocals ... among other things
Murmuüre - avant-garde/experimental black metal of the highest order, really, really weird
ColdWorld - atmospheric black metal, highly recommended
The Ruins of Beverast - black metal, latest album, Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite, has some doom metal in it
Ulver - started as black/folk metal in Bergtatt, made a folk album in Kveldssanger, became raw black metal in Nattens Madrigal and then changed into an avant-garde/ambient/electronica band ever since; really awesome and diverse stuff - you should definitely check out their non-metal albums!
Blut aus Nord - not really unknown in most circles, but definitely something you should give a listen
Deathspell Omega - avant-garde black metal, mindblowing and really sick stuff; give Paracletus a try, you won't regret it.
Westering - post-black metal/shoegaze, shapes vistas of claustrophobic dimensions and a suffocating emptiness; horribly underrated
Onirik - orthodox black metal from Portugal, very good
Nagelfar - awesome black metal band that broadened the horizons of their genre by combining their Germanic sounds with electronica and other elements, highly atmospheric and merciless in its ferocity, definitely worth a listen!

I'll stop now because I could go on forever... If you have any more questions regarding black metal you can always ask me, though you should definitely try out some bands from Zeitgeister Music (black metal or not) :)

Oranssi Pazuzu - great Finish band who mix jazz-fusion with black metal; their style has been called psychedelic black metal and they're new to the scene. Quite innovative and impressive material.

By the way, has any of the aforementioned bands piqued your interest? Has it been enjoyable or helpful so far?

I'll take your challenge and raise it with an even more brutal rendition of this song:

The Principle of Evil Made Flesh and Dusk and Her Embrace by Cradle of Filth are absolutely brilliant. As the band aged, they got farther and farther away from black metal, but their first albums were glorious for the genre.

Behemoth is a good one. Their early albums were pure black metal, but kind of like Cradle of Filth, they're style changed gradually over time. Though they could still be considered a mix of black and death metal.

Also, look into Emperor, Bathory and Carpathian Forest. Two classics.

Some newer black metal bands I enjoy are Anorexia Nervosa and Graveworm.

Well damn, there go a bunch of my recommendations. Hm, well another interesting band, though i might be a little biased here :p, would be Negura Bunget. Their album Om has some very interesting folk influences.

Most of my recommendations are already listed, but I noticed an inexcusable lack of Drudkh. Most of their songs are pretty slow, and very atmospheric.

This list is full of awesome.

But it needs Negura Bunget and Wolves In The Throne Room.
Thank you! You, sir, have excellent taste! Yeah, I thought about putting Negura Bunget and Wolves in the Throne Room on the list, but they're not as obscure as most of the bands in my posts. Than again, I did put bands like Ulver, Deathspell Omega, Blut aus Nord and Nagelfar in there. Thanks for bringing them in anyway!

Thanks for this man, kinda reminds me of a black-metal Rapture in a way.
I'm glad you like it! If you want to consider buying/downloading it you should definitely go for it. It's a real treat to sit throughout the entire Melancholie2 album.

Come on everyone! OP may not be responding, but we can make this list one vast and epic compilation of black metal gems - both obscure and well-known! :)
