Really, anything by Quentin Tarantino.

Pulp Fiction is probably his best, and then there is Kill Bill, Death Proof, Basterds, Reservoir Dogs, etc.

TOP SECRET!

Many funny scenes in this movie, from the Pigeon Statue to the Underwater Saloon fight scene.
Classic.

Recently I started sixth form, and one of the subjects I decided to take was Film Studies, and as a result I get to borrow films from the school library.

The point of the thread is this: what are some good films that I should take out? I'm willing to watch anything so long as it's decent. And if you include a brief synopsis of the film, no spoilers please.

EDIT: I also took History, Biology and Classical Civilisation for my A-levels, so stop being smug.
Starship troopers is an amazing action film that has some satirical humor and makes you proud to be a human.
Out of 10 I would give it...lee evans.
Thats way better than 10 ever could be.

Scarface
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Spirited Away
Clockwork Orange
Citizen Kane (just because it's Citizen Kane)
and maybe a B-Movie. Something from Ed Wood if you can find a movie or just watch Evil Dead 1 and 2.

Depends on what type of film you're looking for.
Yeah, could you be a bit more specific?

But off the top of my head, my (highly biased) Film Studies Primer would include the following:

Metropolis (1927)
Battleship Potemkin (1925)
King Kong (1933)
La Grand Illusion (1937)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Pinocchio (1940)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Casablanca (1942)
The Big Sleep (1946)
Othello(1952)
Pather Panchali (1955)
Le Notti di Cabiria (1957)
A Bout de Souffle (1960)
Yojimbo (1961)
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Andrey Rublyov (1966)
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Aguirre: der Zorn Gottes (1972)
Chinatown (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Taxi Driver (1976)

That's my fairly compact, if incomplete, history of film. Basically, if you're actually studying film, you should have at least seen these. Like I said though, if you can be more specific about what you're looking for, I got like, a zillion more recommendations. But then, who doesn't?

Sherlock, Jr.

It's an amazing silent film directed and starring Buster Keaton. He also does his own stunts in the movie, which are pretty fucking fantastic for a film from 1924.

Twelve Monkeys [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_Monkeys] is an excellent psychological thriller. You know what's going to happen the whole time, but you're not sure it's going to happen.

Goodfellas [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodfellas]is phenomenal; you should take a look at this, too.

Hero [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_(2002_film)] is one of my favorite films of all time; it has so many different layers of meaning that it still boggles my mind. I would recommend it just as an awesome movie.

If you're looking for a balls-out action movie, Die-Hard is a good choice; however, I'd also recommend The Road Warrior [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_Warrior].

There are other things, of course, but nothing I don't think would be mentioned by someone else.

Apologies if this isn't very helpful.
