A little while ago, a friend of mine introduced me to the work of Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw, including his series, Zero Punctuation. Which is how I ended up becoming a member of the most hallowed of sites. But in looking through his work, I came across something else. His series of point and click adventure games, the Chzo Mythos.

Now, the first experiences of mine in playing any sort of point and click adventure game were through two PS1 demos back when I was a little kid. These were the first Broken Sword game, and a Discworld game where you play as Rincewind. Aside from them, I never really got into the whole adventure genre. Monkey Island, Psychonauts and Grim Fandango completely passed me by as my interests moved first towards platformers, then beat-em-ups, and finally FPS, RTS and RPGs.

But when I started playing through the Chzo Mythos I fell in love with the whole idea of adventure games, the stories that develop, and really enjoyed them. And then I went out and I bought American McGee's Alice. Not a point-and-click, but an adventure game nonetheless. And then just recently I was lucky enough to get my hands on a cheap, £15 copy of the Limited Edition of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. It contains both of the Longest Journey games, the OST for Dreamfall, and an exclusive concept art book. I'm now playing through The Longest Journey and absolutely loving.

So what I now intend to do is to start playing more adventure games. Preferably point-and-click, though others are fine too. I already have a small list of the games I want, but I'm unsure as to which of these are available for PC, and are compatible with Windows Vista. Here is the list:

- Grim Fandango
- Psychonauts
- The Secret of Monkey Island
- Monkey Island 2
- The Curse of Monkey Island
- Escape from Monkey Island

What I want to know is, which of these titles are available now on PC and compatible with Windows Vista? And also, what other adventure games would you recommend me?

EDIT: Okay, here are lists of the adventure games I currently own, intend to get, and want to know if they're Vista-compatible:

- The Longest Journey
- Dreamfall
- American McGee's Alice
- The Chzo Mythos
- Grim Fandango
- Psychonauts
- Monkey Island series
- Broken Sword series
- Sam and Max series
- The Clock Tower series
- The Silent Hill series (okay, not strictly 'adventure', but still a series I'd love to play...

Hmm Full Throttle, The White Chamber, 7th Guest, Maniac Mansion, Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle, Dark Seed and Clock Tower are good ones I can think of right now.

Grab a copy of SCUMM ( http://www.scummvm.org/ ). There are many good point and click adventure games out there. Sam and max, day of the tentacle, indiana jones series, full throttle, loom, etc

Can't go wrong with the old Police Quest games. And I think many of them are actually abandonware by now; if not, you can probably get them pretty cheap.

Thanks, I've been looking at the Sam and Max games as well, and the Broken Sword quartet. However, I still need to figure out, are all of the titles I mentioned in my OP available for PC, and Vista-compatible?

If you go to GOG.com, you can get a few adventure games for cheap and they are compatible with Vista. While Steam offers a larger selection of "classic" adventure games, I've heard that they aren't as Vista-ready as the GOG games, which means you'll want to run them with SCUMMVM.

But yeah, you should totally get the LucasArts adventure games.
I'd also recommend:
Syberia
Runaway: A Road Adventure
Still Life
The Last Express
Broken Sword (although I've never played the third and fourth games, but I'm totally content with the first two)

Enjoy :)

Anonymous Game Developers [http://www.agdinteractive.com/] Have been re-making old Sierra Adventure games for years. They're free, they're fun, and a great way to get started in the adventure game genre.

Afterwards, I highly recommend the "Space Quest" and "Quest for Glory" series. They re-released the "Space Quest" anthology for XP, but I don't know if it'll run on Vista. I have both collections on DOS, and run them thru an emulator.

All the best!

The Longest Journey. Great story, and the humor is like a toned-down (i.e., good) Joss Whedon venture.

If you are an absolute geek, I'd recommend console-text adventures. The old Infocom games are fantastic.

Hmmmmm, I've never been a big fan of console-text adventures. I tried one before and I just couldn't get into it. As long as I have some visuals I'm happy, the graphics don't need to be brilliant (after all, I'm playing The Longest Journey now and it's graphics aren't that great), but I like some sort of visuals when I play. Thanks for the input though :).

Blade Runner and Under a killing moon, both great detectivegames. Also Memento Mori is quite new and ok.
