Alice in wonderland and slaughter house 5 seem to be missing from your post.

It's comforting to see that so many books I like are also liked by other people. Fahrenheit 451 is excellent, especially if you like dystopian settings, and some other books by C.S. Lewis are very good. His Space Trilogy, The Great Divorce, and The Screwtape Letters are all excellent. However, as opposed to the Chronicles of Narnia which just have Christian overtones (mostly), all of these books are actually about Christianity, and if you're not a religious person you might not enjoy them very much.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a beautiful, if horribly depressing, book. Keep a bottle of anti-depressants as you read this masterpiece.

Bluesman by Andre Dubus is a good read for someone your age.
I love that book, but unlike many people I think it's probably one of the most uplifting books I've ever read, but I really like "hope in the darkest pits of despair" plots. Most people would probably be extremely depressed by it.

A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick will really mess with your head. (The movie was good, too.)

I would recommend reading non-fiction works.

Books like 13 things that don't make sense and the Road to Reality, the Complete Guide to the Universe.

Update: The wifey - she's a librarian - is telling me that you might like dystopian novels like Oryx and Crake by Margret Atwood, as well as her book Year of the Flood. Also, Brave New World would be right up your alley if you liked Animal Farm.

Metro 2033
Just finished it myself! What did you think? I found the translation to be a little odd in places and some of the bits about God just pissed me off!

However, the stars of the Kremlin, and that thing underneath it in Metro 2, and any bits on the surface we all very good.

Over all, 8/10.

How did you feel about the ending?

***!!!!SPOILER WARNING!!!!***

I loved the fact that it ended badly for Artyom and humanity, it shows that they learned nothing from the war that destroyed the world. The dark ones had come to help, and given humanity one last chance to save ourselves, but we, again, fuck things up.

It was great that there was no Hollywood ending.

OT,

The Shadow of The Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.

I reckon I've read about 1000 books (a book a week, more or less, since I was 12) and this one is in my top 5. Amazing!

The ending excused every fault i had with the book loved it

Have you Ever heard of the Darren Shan saga? It's another vampire story, yes, but it's not exactly the same as the usual idea of vampires, and not only is it not some terrible vampire-werewolf-human romance, but it's kind of a deconstruction of the vampire genre, in my opinion.

Then there's also the Series of Unfortunate Events, which also a sad series (duh, series of UNFORTUNATE events) and although the writing style kind of annoys me, it's a rather touching and tragic story of how three siblings stick by each other when it seems the whole world is against them.

Those are my recommendations.
hey anything beats twilight the series of unfortunate events read the first seems pretty good so far thanks for the recommendation

The Wafarer Redemption (series)- Sara Douglass
anything by Terry Brooks , especially the Sword of Shannara series
Sword of Truth (series) - Terry Goodkind
the first 4 of A Wizard in Rhyme series by Christopher Stasheff (if you don't mind/enjoy a book with predominant Christian beliefs)

Ah. I think. So the next time my roomie gives me the stink-eye for reading Flashpoint or Sigil I can just say "No, no my dear, this isn't a comic it's High Fantasy Modern Mythology...." (She seems to prefer sentances that you can have a glass of wine with....)

Then again it's just my opinion.
Ah, I see. Well, then yes, that would be the perfect sentence for some as... sophisticated as that. Or at least someone who thinks/acts as though they are.
