If you like pokemon, you'll like dragon quest monsters: Joker.
It's pretty much the only other monster slaving game franchise out there that doesn't suck.

In terms of downloads, there's Wario Land 3 (Fantastic game), Ikachan, VVVVVV, Mole Mania, Soul of Darkness (A surprisingly good Castlevania knock off), Amoebattle, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Harmo Knight, Mighty Switch Force 1&2 and Liberation Maiden.

In terms of cartridges though, there's the Megaman Starforce series, Kid Icarus Uprising, the Mario & Luigi series from Partners in Time, Bowser's Inside Story, and Dream Team, Okami Den, Radiant Historia, Rune Factory 3 (Love this game), Super Robot Taisen: Endless Frontier... Lot's of games.

Putting in my vote for Fire Emblem Awakening, Devil Survivor Overclocked, Super Mario 3D Land and Devil Survivor 2. All phenomenal games. Fire Emblem Awakening in particular is the best game I've played this year.

Bought Mario 3D land and Fire emblem today, actually. Fire emblem already is just...amazing, seriously, get it, right now. And Mario land, will be great when I get the real game tomorrow...the guy at EB said they had a preowned version for cheaper so I got it. It's actually the store demo version and has one level >.> (That being said, that one level was awesome and I can already say it's an awesome game.

Well Advance Wars Dual Strike was pretty decent.

Why yes, it has been a long time since I had the original DS.

While I did see Dragon Quest Games mentioned, I didn't see them get much thunder. They are some of the best classic turn-based RPGs out there. DQ9 has an unbelievable amount of content, 4, 5, and 6 have great story and their own unique little features but they all have the same kind of gameplay, a very tried and true turn-based combat system with actual DIFFICULTY. Definitely suggest these!

Chrono Trigger DS: This is arguably the best version of Chrono Trigger, it has EVERYTHING the original game did and adds extra content via unobtrusive means that don't really impact the original classic. Also it has a great Stylus interface available if you prefer that playstyle but doesn't prevent you from going total traditionalist with D-Pad and Buttons only.

Harvest Moon: Sunshine Islands: This is probably one of the best handheld Harvest Moon Games around that I've tried, lots of ways to customize your play experience and go at your pace.
