The only "proper" metal band I listen to are My Dying Bride, but they are Doom Metal, and that's generally a lot slower than other types. Very heavy though.

Since most people have already mentioned the awesomeness that is Iron Maiden, I would have to go with Dio. Though I'm not quite sure whether they go under rock or metal.

New Wave of British Heavy Metal, so they're metal. In-fact, they're a hell of a lot closer to metal than some bands listed here.
