Here's something you can torrent right now, and legally:

The Tunnel, a found-footage type of horror-movie distributed through a pro-P2P-Publisher.

While it's not exactly fresh and innovative, it's still very moody and of pretty high quality.
Also, if you liked the endings of both REC and REC² you'll probably dig that almost the entire movie is like this.

http://vodo.net/thetunnel

Vodo.net seems to be a good start for indie shorts, movies and webseries anyways, although i still have to check out the other things offered there.

The Punk (aka The Punk And The Princess) if you can find it. It's probably the most fun you'll ever see the cast of a movie having.

SLC Punk, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Everything's Gone Green, Delicatessen and if you're into punk: Decline of Western Civilization (I don't know if that one really counts as indie, but I'm counting it).

Go see the Hole (not the one from, like last year), it's a cinematic masterpiece that pushes our perceptions on what... infact, no, I can't do this, it's a piece of crap, don't touch it with a bargepole.

I'd highly recommend A Dog's Breakfast. It's funny and a bit mental, and if you happen to be a fan of Stargate Atlantis you might recognise a few bits and pieces.

Edit: Also, Young Einstein. Using E=mc^2 to brew beer. Oh yes!

The only one I can think of, which hasn't been mentioned is El Mariachi, which was Rodriguez's debut film.

Happy Accidents: Vincent D'Onofrio and Marisa Tomei. Plus, it's an interesting take on time travel.

Velvet Goldmine: Henry VIII, Obi-Wan, and Batman join forces to explore the glam rock scene. And it's totally not about David Bowie. Nope. Not at all.

Pulp Fiction: If you're watching Reservoir Dogs, this should be next on your list.

The Matador: Definitely one of the best Pierce Brosnan movies out there.

Ghost Writer: The other great Pierce Brosnan movie.

Moon: It's been mentioned earlier, but it really is that good.

Primer: For when you really want to be completely puzzled and yet also intrigued.

Are we talking Indie Indie or indie-esque?

I agree with Primer, if you're a sci-fi person. Dead Man's Shoes, Being John Malkovich (if that counts), Blair Witch Project

I'd very strongly recommend Moon, if that counts. One of the smartest and best science fiction films of the last few years, and Sam Rockwell's performance is mesmerising. Especially considering it was Duncan Jones' debut film, this is definitely one to watch if you like quality science fiction, and wish it was about big ideas rather than big explosions.
If you liked Moon, check out Hunter Prey. It's another low budget sci fi film that delivers. Both are on Netflix Instant Queue.

Primer, a sci fi movie about time travel. Extremely hard to follow as time travel should be.

I'm just gonna say Moon again.
The academy were retarded not to nominate Rockwell - but, then again, this was the awards that failed to acknowledge Sharlto Copley AND Zoe Saldana....
Also, FYI, Moon might have been Duncan Jones' first feature, but he's the son of DAVID FUCKING BOWIE so...yeah.

Other recommendations, picked randomly from a hat: The Science of Sleep: Michel Gondry doing what he does with a Mexican playing a Spaniard speaking French in France.
[Rec]: Cray Spaniards doing crazy things.
Aaaaaand the relatively "indie" Sexy Beast: Brilliant actors being shouted at by Sir Ben Kingsly for hours.

Being John Malkovich is the "indie"-est thing this side of Adaptation.
That and I Heart Huckabees...

I say it on every movie recommendation thread: In Bruges.
Right, is that film actually good? We (gf & I) started watching the first 10 mins, then we got bored and ended up missing an hour and a half. Is it worth renting it again to actually watch?

I also recommend all of these. Moon and Primer especially.

And because I don't really know what movies are "indie" or not, I'll list a couple of smaller budget/more obscure films that I particularly enjoyed

-The Man From Earth A kind of weird movie of the type that you can take what you want from it. Worth watching though.

-Memento Not sure if it counts because everyone's heard of it, but it's just a crazy psychological thriller.

-Layer Cake An awesome British Crime Drama, starring Daniel Craig. I wouldn't be asking for anything more.

-Everything is Illuminated Just an interesting film to watch

-Synecdoche, New York A pretty crazy movie. Not really sure what it's about.

-Waking Life Crazy movie that basically plays out as a documentary interviewing a bunch of people on philosophy, with a cool visual style to boot.

-The Best of Youth FUCKING LONG (6 hours,) but I'd say well worth it. It'd be hard to fit the entire lives of two italian boys in any less time.

I liked the romantic comedy Jump Tomorrow.
African guy goes on a road trip with a suicidal French guy to his arranged wedding at Niagara Falls, while chasing after the Spanish girl of his dreams who is dating a British twat.

Yes, In Bruges is really good. It's more of a character drama than a shoot-em-up, though (despite starring assassins), so if you go into it knowing that, you'll probably be better prepared.

Hell you say you've seen Bubba Ho-Tep, so I guess Evil Dead 1,2 and 3 if you haven't seen them already, they get gradually funnier and less scary, which is an interesting trend I must say.

Primer as I've seen it already mentioned here, that's one hell of a mindfuck.

I'll also name some films that aren't indie by any means, but are personal favourites of mine, Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels, Snatch, 28 Days Later, Crank and L4yer Cak3. All fantastic IMHO

Also Ong Bak 2 for one of the most awesome martial arts films ever. As a friend pointed out to me, every single door he opens is by forcing a person through it with his knees.

Sorry I couldn't name any Indie titles, don't really know any
