I've been listening to a lot of music lately, and I'm finding that I don't really have anything new to listen to. I've always liked the jazz and blues music from afar, but I've never really found a comfortable entry point into both genres.

These are examples of the sort of thing I'm after...

I love the slow, bluesy sound of the Zeppelin tune and the upbeat tempo of the Cowboy Bebop one (especially the string bass, I love that stuff).

So, fellow escapists, please expose me to 2 awesome genres, and please post examples.

The first two sound pretty good. Not so sure about the last one. I shall investigate further...

Personally I like the oldies, like 30s and 40s so like Charlie parker, Duke Elington, Count Bassie.
One of my faves is Charles Mingus - Moanin' If you haven't heard it (or played it) you definetly should. It's both fun to listen to and fun to play if you can move your fingers the speed of light.

The last one is more blues-rock, but might be what you're looking for. The rest, most bigtim jazz fans would know, so this post might be all for not. Enjoy, though.

The Black Keys. Granted, they're more Blues-Rock, but I say it still counts.

And no one can tell me that BB King isn't some sorta genius.

They're on a mission from God.

Unfortunately here in Germany I am unable to view any of the videos so my ideas might not exactly be what you are looking for. I have been recommended the jazz streams from sky.fm , especially http://www.sky.fm/bebop/ . I personally prefer danceable stuff like http://goldfishlive.com/ which is considered being Nu Jazz.

pretty obvious, but doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet: Eric Clapton, especially with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers Gary Moore, and Albert Collins.

I reckon most of the obvious ones will be posted already, but I didn't see any John Lee Hooker, so I'll suggest that.

And obvoiusly you like Led Zeppelin, but do you know When the Levee Breaks? Probably the bluesiest Zep song I know

And while we're talking about blues, I just watched Black Snake Moan. I suggest any blues/Samuel L Jackson fans do the same.
Heres a little sample of the awesome blues/Jackson in the film
The lyrics in that one seem to suit Samuel L Jackson like a glove, maybe it's all the 'muthafucka's that are in it.
