Lately I've been trying to get into some new music and I thought I might give jazz a try. The only problem is that I have no idea where to start. I've Googled a few artists and found a few songs but I've become rather stuck. So to any jazz enthusiasts out there are there any jazz bands out there you'd recommend? Any style and any age is fine.

Thanks

My favorites are Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Try compilation cd's with various artists to fine-tune your taste.
Good luck, mate.

Just any type of jazz? It's kind of a huge genre with many many flavors. What kind of music genres do you enjoy?

Pandora is your friend. Make an account, and put in an artist with a specific style (like Miles Davis or Louis Armstrong) or a song of a style you like and it'll automatically find similar stuff for you. Or if you're unsure just put in "jazz" as the genre and see where it takes you. You can skip a song of you don't like it, or rate it thumbs up or thumbs down to indicate whether or not you like it. Pandora's also got a shuffle feature now, if you want to branch out a little from the songs you've been getting.

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not as big of a Jazz enthusiast as I'd like to think I am, but since a couple of years back I do listen to a fair amount of it.

Like HeOfMalice said, it's a huge genre, what do you have in mind? Is it '20s big band swing you're looking for, or is it something leaning more towards Bebop?

Depend what you are looking for Jazz varies a lot from traditional to experimental

Miles Davis is the gold standard for old school jazz trumpet.

Acoustic Ladyland are my favourite experimental jazz band.

It's sucha varied genre it's really hard to recommend anything really. It's a deep rabbit hole. Start somewhere random on Last FM and keep finding related artists maybe?

I enjoy Jazz, but it has to be progressive. It gets repetitive after a while, and is a pretty passive-listening genre. You could try Revolution Void or some of Opeth's more acoustic stuff, but the only 'Jazz' song I typically listen to every now and again is this little gem I found last year:

I agree with pretty much everything in this post. Opeth's album "Damnation" may not be as jazzy as you're looking for but it's technical, complicated and gorgeous. Very very highly recommended. Just a warning: Don't go any further into Opeth's discography than just that album unless you're a fan of melodic deathmetal though.

Edit: Forgot to input anything other than my fanboying towards Opeth. Ignore the fact that this is from an anime, the song is pretty awesome.

Miles Davis. The album "Bitches Brew" in particular is a true milestone of the genre, and since it has a lot of rock influences, it's somewhat easier for people not used to jazz to get into.

Bear in mind though that "easier" is definitely in comparison to other improv jazz classics. It's still pretty difficult stuff.

I'm not really a jazz person, but here's some stuff I like that I guess qualifies as 'jazz':

Esbjörn Svensson Trio. Swedish jazz trio, now defunct as the pianist is dead. If you like it you should probably check out the bass-player (Dan Berglund) and drummer's (Magnus Öström)respective solo stuff.

Nils Petter Molvaer. Norwegian trumpetjazz.

Bohren & der club of gore. German NOIR DOOM jazz, amazing, very Twin Peaks.

Lastly, Tin Hat Trio. Folkjazz, or something. Good stuff.

The best place to start with Jazz is jazz standards.

http://www.jazzstandards.com/compositions/index.htm

The thing about Jazz is that although there are definately bands dedicated to playing Jazz music, and there are definately lots of them and they can be a great place to start, quite a lot of Jazz is an interpretation of an already existing song. A cover, so to speak. Jazz is really flexible in that you can interpret a song in 10000000000000000000000 ways.

Here's one that I quite like.

Although this is what I think of Jazz: It isn't a genre itself rather than a certain way of playing a song

Songs that are really easy to play in a Jazz style, or were writted in a Jazz style are what usually become jazz standards.

I'm not that knowledgeable on jazz but I've been trying to get into it too so I recommend Miles Davies.

Weather report is great.
Check out Richard Bona.
Take five is a total classic.
Chick Corea and Return to forever can be worth a look.
Pat Metheny.
Here's a performance of Donna Lee by Joe Pass and Niels Henning Ørstad Pedersen.
And this, just because it's chill:
Trombone shorty is sorta jazzy as well.
As a bassist, I can't allow myself to skip Jaco.
