so my mom recently put me in charge of finding a good math game to help my sister do better at basic math. shes in 4th grade. its not really in my wheelhouse, but i figured someone on the forums might have a good idea.

recent games would be better, wii or pc please. i mentioned mathblaster and treasure mathstorm, but those games are so old, installation would be a total *****.

thanks for the help guys!

You could check out the games on 'bbc bitesize', I'm sure they have some math-y gamey stuff.
As far as proper like, instally games though...mm, I'm not so sure.

But yeah, hang on I'll fetch a link for you...

Goddamn it, silly differences in the school system across the pond.
I THINK that's the right age group...if not, just browse around the site, lad:]

Teach her to play darts (hey, it's a game). It'll help her to brush up on addition and subtraction (as well as teaching her hand-eye coordination).

Monopoly.

I wasn't great at math growing up unless I thought of it in terms of money....

Show her a very simple programming language like SmallBasic, or even one of those drag-and-drop ones, and ask her to program something that would require math skills.

Then, it's not just learning it, it's learning how it's useful, and being allowed to experiment with those numbers.
Learned that concept from this book [http://www.amazon.com/Mindstorms-Children-Computers-Powerful-Ideas/dp/0465046746]

Look up anything by The Learning Company. I'm sure there's something.

EDIT: ...I should probably mention that most of them are fairly old. However i'm sure there's ways to get them to work.

I'll look into it if you want >>

Well you mean like multiplication and division as well as other arithmetic? If that's what you're looking for, then why not (Please understand where I'm coming from before flaming me) try Minecraft? *Brandishes flame shield*

Look, I understand it's a game with no real purpose, but shoot, if you set up certain math problems in the game (i.e. I have 18 clay, how many clay blocks will this make?) by getting the items necessary using an inventory editor or something. If that's too difficult or pointless, then maybe one of the JumpStart games? Oh wait!

Ta-dah! This website is what I used to go to when I was much younger. The grade level can be adjusted once you pick a piece and gender. If that doesn't work, then I don't know.

It's not basic math, but World of Warcraft is, pretty well literally, ALL math.
It is always entertaining for me, to think of all those people who actually use spreadsheets to calculate their maximum dps.

If your sister isn't spoiled by the modern-day sharp graphics and high polygon count, try Math Rescue. It's the only math platformer I know of. Have her play it on hard.

Okay, ...Treasure Mathstorm was released in 1992. Get DOSbox, mount the installer (or if you got it to install, where you installed it) and install it/run it through there. It'd be the only way on a modern system. I can't seem to find anything they've done after 1994. If they've done anything at all... So it looks like you'll need DOSbox all the way.

Luckily DOSbox is pretty straight forward to use. If you need any help with it though, ask me.

I'll get a little ahead of you though, and assume she'll want to start the program up on her own. Not always needing help with running DOSbox, so...Have this

http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/DOSBoxShortcuts

It'll explain how to make a shortcut run the game through DOSbox. Without needing to run DOSbox, mount the folder, execute the EXE and so on... It'll work like a normal app.
