Battle field 3
team fortress 2
Half life 2
RPG: (so many different types of RPG on pc so kind of hard to suggest for you)
Witcher series
Skyrim
maybe try an mmo or a moba game like:
WOW
Guild wars 2
Dota 2
League of legends
RTS:
Total war series
Civilisation
Star craft 2
Racing:
Shift2
Horror:
Amnesia dark decent
Also try out Dayz when the stand alone comes out or if you like army sims get arma 2 and try the free dayz mod.
There is a lot of games I could suggest so if you let me know what kind of games your into I'll narrow it for you.
Also there are a lot of good free to play games also so don't be afraid to try multiple ones out.
I'd like to expand on the RTS and RPG lists.
For more western RPGs, try out bioware's classics (KOTOR, first dragon age, jade empire etc.) or perhaps some of obsidian's or black isle's work. There are plenty of classics, though those are 3 good big names to get you started.
Mass effect the trilogy is worth playing though at least once; as even though quality varies from game to game and sub-arc to sub-arc, it is overall an excellent series.
For Jrpgs, a friend of mine recommends things such as final fantasy, last remnant, fire emblem, fire emblem, and fire emblem. (I cant remember more, and am not well versed with jrpgs... Wait, play persona 3 and 4. Everyone seems to like those. Anyway, I cant remember more, and jrpgs are far from my strong suit, popular opinion does have SOME merit).
For RTS
Supreme commander:
The land units cannot march in formation if you have more than 3. this is fact. Don't even bother trying. The games can drag on as well, the campaigns are fairly limited (no more than 20 missions across both the original game and forged allince, the expansion), and forged alliance's missions do like to pull some out of nowhere dick moves on you when the map expands, but it's an interesting experience and the 3 factions have just enough toys that it's worth trying them all out. For example, if you are a fan of the concept of land-battleships, both the UEF and Cybran have something for you, though the cybran are a bit more literal, and slow. Also, the scale is NUTS. End game you'll be cranking out hundreds mid-high tier units in but minutes.
Just remember, the prime ACU dies, you lose. And he's fragile. Keep it safe.
Star Wars: Empire at war
Ok i'm running out of time (in-class right now), so i'll make the rest of these short.
Space battles in this game kick ass. not terribly large scale so you can have fun with micro-managing and shooting specific hardpoints on the larger ships (i.e anything bigger than a corellian corvette, which is what leia was on in the opening of episode IV if you aren't a star wars geek).
Sins of a Solar Empire:
Supreme commander scale x1.5, and it's in space. It's awesome.
LOTR Battle for Middle Earth 2:
an interesting resource gathering system and a fun system for progression during the campaign, and I just enjoy the combat since it's unit based, and unit based is great.
Company of heroes:
It's great, and thanks to the cover system and attention to detail it's got plenty of room for some very fun micro-managing. Buy it. Buy it twice. I'ts "highest rated RTS of all time" with damn good reason.
Company of Heroes:
I wasn't kidding when i say buy it twice. its too late to save thq, but relic still earned that money.
As for the total war games. start with rome. It's still great and you learn to appreciate the advancements they've made since then. But seriously, start with Rome 1, then skip empire and napoleon, but play every one they have made since rome. Grand scale, nice tactical variety, great aesthetics, great unit variety, the grand campagin opens up even more options for putting your enemies in a corner before you even manage a battle yourself (because auto-resolve is sometimes your friend)
Edit:
Oh, and did i mention that the more recent total war games, and company of heroes, are absolutely beautiful? The graphical quality is truly amazing, and the animations are pretty good too.
