How about a top down racer like the Micro Machines series? IIRC MM V4 is 4 player local.

So, a couple buddies and I have regular get-togethers where we just spend the evening on the couch playing games with plenty of junkfood and equally unhealthy beverages. Naturally that also includes sating our need for speed, usually by playing Mario Kart, WipeOut or, well, Need For Speed. We've got another one planned next weekend, but I feel like injecting something fresh into our usual oeuvre. Something fun and relatively easy to get into.

Between the four of us we've got every 5-8th gen console except the Dreamcast and we also all have a DS, so that's also an option. The only limitation is that the game should have at least 2-player split-screen, preferably 4-player.

So yeah, any and all recommendations are welcome.

Btw, I've already been looking into the Sonic & Sega All-Stars games. They any good?

Blur is supposedly really fun. I thought it looked fantastic when it first came out but I just never got around to playing it. It has a sequel now too I believe.

Activision shut down the developers Bizarre Creations not long after it's release because it wasn't very successful.Chances of a sequel are pretty miniscule I reckon

Not top down, but Sega Superstars Transformed is loads of fun.

Also, one the PC it's got Heavy Weapons Guy in it, every single round ends with everyone yelling IS NOT POSSIBLE down the mic.

Burnout!! Goodness, I love Burnout! The older titles are in arcade-style: Burnout revenge, Burnout 3 or Dominator. It's more about crashing, very satisfying!!

I didn't like Burnout Paradise because of the lack of split-screen and its open-world approach, I kept running into shortcuts that'd turn me around.

For some reason my reply and the OP's post has gotten mixed up :/

I've played the demo and it was great fun, it uses wipeout style boosters and a game mode in the demo requires you to use them to stop a timer from ticking down.

I've been meaning to pick it up myself.

Reviewed the latest one a while ago on my blog (woolhatgaming.tumblr.com if you wanna read an in depth review, knock off a point if you aren't a huge Sega nerd like me), they're damn good, especially Transformed. Great characters, great weapons, extremely well balanced, great tracks, lots to unlock, lots to do, everything but time trials can be done with up to 4 players. Tonnes of different events from grand prixs to battle mode to aserial ring races and such.

Colourful, fast, imaginative, fun and really simple to just pick up and play whilst still offering a challenge. It isn't just a nostalgia trip preying on classics, it's a new classic in it;'s own right. Also for my money it's better than Mario Kart has been in a long time.

Incidentally, that was my recommendation for a racing game, get a couple buddies around it's a riot.

I'm curious, did you or any of your buddies pick up the broadband adapter for the GameCube? It cost $30 when it was new. I suppose the asking price of around $60 today isn't that bad considering not many people bought them.

My friend and I networked several cubes together for a convention and we tested out Mario Kart Double Dash with 8 people. I don't remember many specifics. We definitely used a switch, that's for sure. I'm just not clear if we had 4 TVs, each with splitscreen or 8 TVs and 8 cubes, all networked together.

What I definitely DO remember is that it was fucking awesome.

*EDIT* Oh right. BURNOUT 3 FTW!

Since I'm the only one in our group with a Gamecube and I don't have a broadband adepter, I'd say the answer is no ;)
I like the suggestion tho. Didn't know you could do that.

Yeah, kinda been wondering about that too. Unless ... you're clairvoyant and responded to my question before I asked it. Or you are secretly the Doctor and are trying to prevent the world-shattering events resulting from the fallout of our gaming-binge.

*EDIT* Also, why didn't I think about Burnout before. Seems so obvious now.

I bought Transformed a month ago, and it is awesome. You can tell Sega put a lot of effort into the game. Some of the tracks are absolutely outstanding, and both splitscreen and online multiplayer works really well. A worthy challenger to the Mario Kart series.

I prefer it to every mario kart except Mario Kart DS and I can safely say it's better than Mario Kart Wii, much less frustrating and it doesn't have any of those blue shell shenanigans.
