Ape Escape, one of my favorite games on the whole system. Also get GTA2, see what it was like when 3D was too expensive for Rockstar.

Xenogears, Vagrant Story (wich should DEFINITLY get a remake), Megaman X4,X5 and X6, Crash 3 (the other 2 aren't that good), Rayman (the FIRST one).

Those will keep you busy for some time, and you will thank me later.

I'd recommend one of my all time favourite games ever...

Parasite Eve

Get it. Now!

Other than that I think most people here has recommended most of the games I would have, so there you have it.

Crash Bandicoot 2 & 3 - These were easily some of the best 3D platformers the PS1 offered. If you had to pick between 2 & 3, I'd go with 2. Just avoid the first one like the bubonic plague.

Spyro 2 - Another amazing platformer. If you can grab the whole trilogy, then good for you.

MediEvil - A rather bizzarre hack n' slash game with a touch of an Action/Adventure game and one of my favorite PS1 games. I easily finished this game like 4 o 5 times with 100% completition... it's that good.

Metal Gear Solid - 'Nuff said.
Also add:

Crash Team Racing- A cart racing game. 'nuff said.

Tekken 3- The best installment in the best fighting game series I've ever played. The more recent ones have more characters and combos, but this is where it really started.

Metal Gear Solid: Still brilliant now.

Syphon Filter: Has dated badly in controls, but is still fun.

If I had a ps1 and if I could find the game Rayman, I would buy it. :)

I can't recomend any more games then that but I think there are lots of good games for the ps1 out there.

Syphon Filter and it's sequels, first and foremostly. It was cutting edge in it's day, and the gameplay that they were able to pull off was just amazing. Also, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Twisted Metal. That game was also ridiculously good for it's general era.

I've never played it, but people seem to like Syphon Filter.
Yeah, Syphon Filter is just awesomesauce. I recommend it.

Also, Quake 2 is good, if you've got a mate to play with. Split screen is pretty fun.

One day I decided to go drudge about in my attic, mostly because Steam was down in my area and I had nothing to do.

After looking for about 15 minutes, I found my old PS1 I had stuffed up there long ago and forgot about it.

And I want to get some games on it. So suggest away.
Crash Bandicoot 2

Uhh, is there anything else? Oh, probably 3.

You know, it'd be helpful if you gave us a list of games you already had, so we could say 'ah, he likes racing games' or 'fighting games' ect.

Off the top of my head, life would not have been as good, without playing Crash Bandicoot 2

It's been way too long for me to remember which games I had. Any old ones I have are either sold or missing in the abyss.

On genres I like, I'm fine with any and all.

So far I'm going to get:

MSG
Castlevania: SotN
Spyro
Crash Bandicoot
FF VII
Rayman
Parasite Eve

Ridge Racer Type 4 is one I haven't seen mentioned yet, it's pretty much the pinnacle of 90's-style arcade racing, wrapped up in an incredibly stylish package with a great acid-jazz soundtrack.

I'd also give a strong recommendation to Ape Escape, a fantastic game that makes very full use of the dual-shock controller. And it has SMG-toting time-travelling monkeys in police-light helmets! What more could you want?

Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus -- This has got to be one of the most unique, awesome, and epic 2D side scrolling games ever made. It is sheer genius, although the learning curve is a bit high.
Holy meow. I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers Oddworld. Not sure if Abe's Exodus is the one I played, but I most certainly miss that game.

Also:

Jade Cocoon -- Haven't played it in forever, so I can't tell you much about it, but a pretty awesome RPG, designed in part with Studio Ghibli, if you're a fan of them (and I am!)

The Legend of Dragoon -- The awesome of this game goes without saying. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that the voice acting in the last scene of the game was SO BAD that it quite nearly ruined the entire game for me. But the story is awesome, and it throws in some neat twists to traditional RPG gameplay.

Those Darn Final Fantasies -- Yes, those. ;)

If you ask me, almost all of the good games for the PS1 were either RPGs or playformers. There's more, but none are coming to my mind at the moment, so I'm sure you can just refer to other posters. xD
