So...yeah. My bro is awesome and got me a refurbished PS4 for Xmas, and a copy of TitanFall 2(which I have on good authority is a damn fine game.) and he also loaded up ShovelKnight for me and some smaller indie party games like Tower Defense, and some Cooking game. So I got 2 major games so far.

What others should I grab in my first 6 months or so?

I'm definitely gonna grab the remastered Shadow of the Colossus. As far as others, I have a small list I'm working on:
1. BloodBorne, even though I don't like Souls games, the visuals are enough for me to just mess around with for awhile. But its spooky.

2. Bioshock Remastered, 'cause its Bioshock, my favorite game of all time, ever.

3. Battlefield 1, if only 'cause the single player looks kinda' fun

4. Maybe Witcher 3? Maybe. I only played the fist one, years ago, and thought it was boring as dirt. But I've been told W3 is better in every way, so someone who didn't like the fist one but did the third sell me on it.

5. Doom. Looks fun enough, and my lappy can't run it, so...

Bloodborne
The Last of Us
The Last Guardian!
Nier Automata (based on the demo).

I can't recommend The Witcher 3. It's main selling point was the writing, and the writing wasn't all that good. As for the game play, even fans will agree that the combat was bad. The only reason to play the game is if you like open world titles. Personally, I hate them. I spent twenty minutes escorting a goat through a wolf infested wood. An escort mission. With a goat. When I got back from the mission I saw a small fire in the distance. Geralt, in all his wisdom, said that it must have been started by a lightning strike. Except that it hadn't rained all day, and the sky was blue. Still irritated after that stupid goat mission, I turned the game off and never returned.

Darkest dungeon if you havent played it on PC.

Guilty gear revelator if you like anime fighting games.

Destiny if you like Pve shooting games. And don't mind needing to play as a group for end game content.

Tales of Zesteria if you like Jrpgs.

Shadow of mordor if you like stealth games.

Smite if you like Mobas.

Witcher 3 if you like Wrpgs.

Dragon age inquisition if you played the previous 2 games.

Divinity original sin if you like old school Arpgs

Final fantasy Heavensward if you like subscription based MMORPGS.

The Shadow of the Colossus remaster is on the PS4? First I've heard of it.

OT: I loved The Last Guardian, but it seems extremely divisive, so proceed at your own risk. Gravity Rush Remastered was a nice surprise. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is a very punchy little beat 'm up with a remarkably captivating story. There's Until Dawn if you have an appreciation for campy slasher horror. Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of the better first-person shooters with a terrific story presentation. The latest Ratchet and Clank was fun, but a bit middling.

The Last Guardian is the one must play PS4 exclusive IMO.

Dishonored 2 is an amazing game and should still come with a digital code for the 1st game. Dishonored is sorta the antithesis for the modern video game obsession with the open world, it's 100% quality over quantity. Even then, it's a better sandbox game than just about all sandbox games due to how much creativity you can use with your powers and how open (not big) the level design is. If you've seen any of SteatlhGamerBR's Dishonored vids, you'll know what I mean. The Clockwork Mansion and A Crack in Time are some of the best designed levels like ever.

Overall I've found this gen to be rather disappointing so far. The Last Guardian and Dishonored 2 are the only games I'd rate an 8/10 or better. I'm very critical of games and view 5/10 as average.

I haven't gotten a chance to play quite a few smaller PSN titles like Armello, Invisible INC., Divinity Original Sin (I played the 1st area and it was good so far), Inside, Never Alone, Rebel Galaxy (a friend told me this is great), Valiant Hearts, Trine 3, Abzu, and Tropico 5. There's a bunch of PS3 PSN games available on PS4 like Journey if you never had a PS3.

I hear the series has gotten lot better than the 1st game but I haven't played the 1st game. If you sorta hate the standard open world RPG, I'm not sure Witcher 3 will change your mind. The writing is more solid than just about any current gen RPG, but we are still talking video game writing here. Witcher 3 is a lot more story and narrative focused with better questing. The gameplay in general is OK at best. The combat system could be a lot better. The most disappointing aspect for me is that the combat is tailored for humanoid enemies vs the monster battles and thus the monster battles don't feel epic or interesting at all (dodge and hit a couple times, rinse and repeat). There's a lot of imbalance as well like how OPed the Witcher buffs against monsters are (on hard, I can just hack away for the most part if I utilize the right potions and oils) and the sign/magic Quen is beyond broken. It's basically a shield that blocks the initial hit against you and its cooldown starts when you apply it so you can more than likely reapply right after getting hit. It wouldn't be a bad idea to at least give the game a try as the complete edition comes with all the DLC and it's rather cheap (should be on sale during the holidays). If you don't care for the game, you can sell it and get most of your money back.

I'm glad you mentioned this actually...If I pick up Final Fantasy XIV on the PS4, is there a subscription that I need to play THAT in addition to the monthly/yearly subscription you pay Sony just to play online in general?

Edit: I don't own a PS4 but I liked Thief and Wolfenstein: The New One on the PS3. They're dirt cheap at this point, they're on the PS4...I mean...why not? Wolfenstein: The New One is like Doom in that it's an amazing new entry to an old franchise with great shooting. Thief is a decent stealth game but if you played the original games, you may not like how they changed the main character from kind-of-a-dick who steals stuff because there's stuff to steal into...well, Batman. I would recommended both of those games on the better console.

You dont need PS+ To play FF14. But its a sub based Mmo so you'll be paying the 12$ a months to play the game.

Basically if you don't have PSN plus you can still play FF14, but if you have psn plus you still need to pay the subscription fee.

Pretty much everything I was going to mention has been listed minus one thing: The Uncharted series.

I'll freely admit two things about it:

1. I'm a fanboy so take my recommendation how you will.

Next one's long

2. The Uncharted series dumps near all of it's resources into presentation. It's gameplay isn't very deep, it's serviceable at it's best and worst at the same time but supplements it with some of the best set-pieces I have ever played.
And they are playable.
It's a good (and accurate) joke that the Uncharted games are playable movies and it's true; cutscenes and vignettes happen frequently, most of them aren't terribly long and the game flows in and out of them seamlessly and about ninety percent of the time, if the control is being taken away from you, it's taken away from Nathan Drake as well or it's just a dialogue scene that would have gained nothing from player input.
That's why I stress the "playable" part of "playable movie" when people say that: Things that would be cutscenes in other games are playable in Uncharted, it's astounding sometimes.

Longs story short, Uncharted's gameplay is just average but if you can forgive that and get wrapped up in presentation, I think you might like it.

No idea if you'd like it, and honestly I can't say if it's good myself since I just picked it up two days ago, but Shantae: Half Genie Hero just came out for the PS4 and it looks adorable.

Wolfenstein: The New Order. It's like a cross between a classic shooter and a modern one, only good, and has a pretty interesting set of environments to explore murder Nazis in. Sure, the plot's disjointed as fuck, but when you can move through one room carefully picking off enemies one by one with a silenced pistol and knife, and then follow that up by clearing out the next room by filling it with bouncing shrapnel rounds from your dual wielded automatic shotguns, you don't care.

Yeah, that's the difference between this one and other TPS or action adventure. I have a feeling God of War could outdo it though as far as "OMG that was insa...OMG I'm still playing what I'm seeing?!?"

That's what cool about Sony's studios; they share their tech and are really in competition with themselves to outdo each other.

I'd definitely recommend Darkest Dungeon if you don't mind a hard tactical game.

Also, get Playstation Plus if you haven't already. You get 2 games a month from that, which is a good way to build up a backlog. I should know...

I think you should first put if you have a any other semi-current/last gen systems like a PS3/X1/etc.

There's some great 'PS4 versions' of last gen games, but few are really worth buying again.
