Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door has the best combat system I've ever seen in an RPG. The customization is somewhat lacking (you can't customize anyone but Mario, unless you consider collecting items that generally increase the power of the partners you choose, and I don't like how you can only have 2 characters (Mario and a partner) when you're in battle.

The Avernum series has awesome customization. You have a party of 4, and you can choose their race, their traits (these give stat bonuses at the cost of making a character require more experience to gain a level) and stats (like proficiency in Mage spells/Priest spells/Thrown weapons/1-handed weapons/2-handed weapons, Health, Magic, Strength, Dexterity, etc.) The combat is grid-based, and the terrain often has a big impact on the battle. Sometimes you'll enter a dungeon and find goblins throwing rocks at you from atop a cliff that your melee guys can't get to without taking a long detour. Or sometimes you'll fight an enemy in a narrow corridor and have a warrior block his way so he can't get to your ranged fighters. Being adjacent to an enemy and trying to run away from them will take a good chunk of your Action Points (what you use to move, attack, etc.), so you can't play keep-away with your enemies (and vice versa)

www.spidweb.com

That site has demos for all 7 games in the Avernum series. If you just want to try the best one first, go with Avernum 6. There's also demos of other games as well. Geneforge is kind of similar to Avernum, except instead of a party of 4, you control 1 character who can summon monsters. Kind of reminds me of Pokemon, like if the trainers could use swords/magic and fight alongside their minions.

I've run out of RPGs to play. So I was hoping that fellow RPG lovers on the escapist would be willing to recommend some that I've missed. My favorites are ones with lots of choice, but feel free to suggest anything that's not a Japanese visual novel with rpg style level ups. Notice I don't say JRPG, if you know of a Japanese Role Playing Game, by which I mean actual role playing and not what I described above, suggest that too. I'm not picky.
The only reason I'm being strict about the Japanese Visual Novel w/ RPG level ups is that I don't want the thread full of games that I know I won't want to play.

I've played and liked:
Baldur's Gate 2
Neverwinter Nights
KOTOR 1 & 2
Mass Effect 1 (ME 2 is a great game, but not an RPG)
Dragon Age
The Witcher
Risen
Fallout 3
Jade Empire
Drakensang: The dark eye (not the best, but still fun)

I didn't like Oblivion, and will be trying Gothic 2 and Vampire the Masquerade at some point, just not right now.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.
Vampires: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Mask of the Betrayer
Planescape: Torment

Are all worthy RPGs missing from that excellent list of RPGs.

Some classics you missed:

Planescape Torment- If you enjoy story-driven RPGs you must simply play this game.
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Vampire: The Masquerade ? Bloodlines
Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of Betrayer(expansion)- not as much of a necessity due to its expansion state, but if you can manage its totally worth it. :)

Hmmm. There's the Diablo games (1 has the best atmosphere, but I doubt you could find it anywhere)

Then there's the Tales of series of JRPG's (Vesperia's on the 360), though I haven't played it. There's Tales of Symphonia on the GC though, and that one's pretty good. Good, real-time combat there.

Honestly, I would recommend anything in the Shin Megami Tensei (specifically, Persona 3) series to you. They give off an incredibly different/refreshing vibe than most JRPGs, and it's really the only JRPG series that's actually trying new things.

To talk about Persona 3 specifically, it really doesn't feel like a "visual novel", rather than a "choose your own adventure" sort of thing. Yes, there's an overarching plot that you're forced to follow, but you're basically given complete freedom as to how you handle all other aspects of the game, and that doesn't just include leveling up, by a long shot.

If you liked Dragon Age, you should probably hit up Awakening XP for it.

This will sound a little odd, but Warhammer 40k:2 single player campaign is actually rpgish. You command / level up / gear up a small handfull of units, and actually choose the order of where to campaign and what optional objectives to go for. AND its multiplayer co-op which is always fun.

I really don't understand why others can't see how you like Fallout3 and not Oblivion/morrowind, I hated the two but liked fallout, format just seemed more suited to a shooter to me.

Try out Mount and Blade Warband (you COULD try the original, but Warband has better graphics+more things to do+more territories). It's a third person RPG where you travel to a nation called Calradia which is in civil war between 5 or 6 factions, you can make your own kingdom, conquer towns, besiege castles, etc. Personally I've sunk about 50 hours into it and barely scraped all that there is to do.

It's 50% off for $14.99 on Steam.

edit: Don't try Awakening, you'll go mad with the bugs introduced in the 1.03 patch which is required to play it. 1.04 didn't fix anything really.

Check out Golden Sun and Chrono Trigger.

Can't go wrong.

Probably because Morrowind and Oblivion's combat system is shitty at best.

Well, erm, I don't know what you consider a "visual novel", but there are a few games that I liked:
The World Ends With You
Kingdom Hearts
Pokemon (All of 'em)
Final Fantasy 3
Chrono Trigger
Tales of Symphonia
ANY Mario RPG (Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi)
Fire Emblem (If it counts)
Monster Hunter (If it counts)

Most of these don't fit the criteria, I betcha. They're just some games that I liked...

Pirate it? (I hope that doesn't brake some forum rule...)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, Planescape looks especially interesting.

Extrodinarily challenging for me not to get a pirated version. I'm in a mental war over taking money from my favorite RPG dev or playing a game that was the BEST GAME EVER!(I don't think it breaks any rules)

I always loved the Paper Mario games. They have turn based combat, but they're well made games and have good story telling and great humor. It may not be similar to the ones you liked, but its still something I would suggest for anyone.

If you've already bought the game in the past I don't see a problem. I don't pirate games from my favorite devs either, unless I've already bought the game and for some reason don't have the disk/download available, then I'll pirate.

If you liked Baldur's Gate 2, try the original and give the Icewind Dale games a try, more of the same although the story isn't quite as good and there's more 'kill everying' style gameplay.

Apart from that, I really liked Arcanum, it's a steampunk style RPG. It's pretty old now, dunno how available it is but give it a look and see if it's your kind of thing I guess.

Sounds like the only kind of RPG the OP likes is the type Bioware typically makes. Top-down perspective, pausable real-time combat, party-based, possibly with a cast of pre-built, likable characters going through prefab scenarios.
I asked for all true RPG recommendations, because I like good, true RPGs. Bioware makes some of the best RPGs, they are not the "only kind of RPG the OP likes." Please don't assume that what I asked for is not what I want.
Why so self-defensive? I'm not judging you, I'm just saying that 11/12 of those games you mentioned are basically a very specific type of RPG. You like to call them "true RPGs," apparently, which sort of betrays just how beholden you are to this type of RPG (it's like your saying anyone who enjoys a different kind of RPG is enjoying a "false RPG"). It's necessary in recommending a game to anyone to understand what type of game they enjoy, and "RPG" ("true" or not) isn't as descriptive as the list the list you gave us.

I've got a recommendation for you. As coincidence would have it, I shelled out $7.50 last night for Space Wolves 3 off of Direct2Drive where it's being sold for 75% off at the moment. Much to my surprise, I discovered it was very much "Baldur's Gate In Space." Seriously. At $7.50, you can afford to take a chance on it. Though be forewarned that the interface is a bit cumbersome until you learn the ins and outs of it.

Probably no sense in eschewing Neverwinter Nights 2 while you're at it. Sure, it's got some down sides versus the original, but it has some up sides as well. Plus, if you hunt around a bit, you might find it being sold in a bundle that includes the expansions - that's a lot of extra game hours. Not to mention a ton of user-made content since (lets face it) the Neverwinter Nights series is basically a construction set for the kind of RPG you enjoy, although perhaps (like me) you find the AD&D mechanics a bit overly kludgey.

You have GOT to try the Rings of Orbis (ringsoforbis.com) Its totally cool and there is a ton of things to do there, besides it is an evolving game with new things being added all the time.
