Lord of the Rings : Battle for Middle Earth. Ages old, yet seems ageless. Would recommend this a million times over.

Play the Campaign(Which played properly, will last ages, and i mean aaaaaaaaaaggggesss) through on Vannilla a couple of times, then play some skirmishes.

Then dive into the crazy world of Mods : This game has one of the strongest RTS modding communities, ever.

Then, when you want some more, but slightly different.

Get the Second one.

And do it allllllllll over again.

Starcraft 2.

Whatever your reasons are, they are utterly insignificant when compared with the majesty of that sublime creation of RTS Godhood. BAWWWWWWWWWW about LAN or the lack of a Spawn function all you want (and you're well justified for doing so), but don't skip out on the best RTS ever made, bar none, because of it.

(Though, if I wasn't a dick, this post would read "Sins of a Solar Empire" and "Age of Mythology")

Homeworld and Homeworld 2
Sins of a Solar Empire

Those are your best bets at this point.

The original Total Annihilation (2 was crap) and its Core Contingency expansion is still one of my favorite RTS games of all time. However, seeing as you've played Supreme Commander, I'll just say it's (mostly) better and worse than that game.

Hegemonia: Legions of Iron was also a solid space RTS. Unit cap made it feel kinda slow to me, but that's mostly in how I play such things.

Total War is the other mainstream RTS offering, but it hasn't managed to make me want to buy it yet, so I can't say whether it's worth it or not.

I've heard mostly bad things about the Warhammer RTS.

If you want something different, check out AI War: Fleet Command. It's like a generic space RTS with a crazy good mod permanently attached to it. You can get it off Stardock's Impulse for pretty cheap. Sins of a Solar Empire is there too.

Yes, World in Conflict has a very unique formula and premise so that should be your #1 choice.

It also the best campaign ive played storywise for an RTS. Plus it has Alec Baldwin in it, and he's badass.

Have you considered Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 and its Yuri's Revenge expansion? It might be old (would you believe the units are 2-D isometric sprites?!), but it's still a blast to play. It was the last good Command and Conquer game made by Westwood, before EA game in and destroyed the legacy of the series forever (EA was starting the process already, but Red Alert 2 managed to emerge mostly unscathed).

I'm well aware of how "Amazing" Starcraft 2 is, I've played and still to this day play the original. However, as I said before, I have my reasons for not buying it right now, which I'd rather not get into due to some guy getting ripped a new asshole earlier today.

I went out and got Age of Mythology, Medieval 2: Total War, and Sins of a Solar Empire. Gonna go get some more off Ebay sometime tomorrow, at which time I'll check this thread one last time. Really digging Medieval 2 so far, I love the epic scale of the campaign.

I tried the AI War: Fleet Command demo, and it confused the living hell out of me. I literally had no idea what to do the entire time. I'm gonna look up a walkthrough before I commit to buying it.

Yeah, I played the original Red Alert as well as Red Alert 2. They're both well held in my heart, along with Generals, but for whatever reason I crash every time I try to launch them.

I've heard alot of good things about World In Conflict, however, I also heard that the AI wasn't really that good, and seeing as I'm not that big of a multiplayer buff, that's sort of a big deal for me.

Played the demo for that as well. Hooooolllllyyyyy shit. Is it just me, or is that game near impossible?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, keep them coming if you have any more.

It must be by demo unless you play agains many hard opponents.
BTW extreme edition is also good. Its basicly same game but while normal edition is more slow game about big castles, extreme is more about rushing.

Empire: Total War. With a Co-op multiplayer campaign, it's the shit!

Empire Earth

World in Conflict

Homeworld and Homeworld 2 (Two really awesome 3D Sci-Fi RTS games. If you don't mind some aging, they are excellent bargain games.)

Not really true. Some of the latter missions can be a ***** to complete since the enemy gets a TON of units.

And if your still not down with it after i said that, then option two is Empire Total war. MASSIVE battles with about 40 to 120 men per unit. It has both RTS and Civilization esc Turn Based Strategy. And it has a mini-tutorial campaign that can help you get into the swing of things. Its also the first in the series to include naval battles. One problem i can think of though is the fact that the manual doesn't help on the little things, so dont look there for help. But other than that its a great game too.

What, nobody suggesting civilization?
Admittedly, its more turn based strategy than an RTS, but its good enough that you should check it out anyway.

1) buy a large paper bag
2)climb inside it
3)set it on fire
4)strategize your way out

I'm gonna be unoriginal and recommend LotR: Battle For Middle Earth 1 & 2, and Star Wars: Empire at War - both great.

A also had some good experiences with Medieval II: Total War - I still remember getting betrayed by France after a long-standing alliance...
