Kratos from God of War. Dude, he like almost destroys the world and kills many people for the heck of it, just to get revenge on what ever god pissed him off.

I can't really identify the protagonist in Baccano! but some of the characters could easily be considered evil mainly looking at Lad Russo and the rail tracer

Hmm. Offhand, I can't think of any books I've read with evil protagonists. If we can include games though, I'd say Prototype was a good one. I also thought that the McCalls in Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood were such assholes that you could call them evil.

Well, that's debatable. Depends on whether you think the end justified the means in what he was trying to achieve.

OT: Do the Artemis Fowl books count? I used to love them when I was younger.

Can't say I've read any books lately where the main character ('protagonist' by the way) is notably evil.

Okay, noone mentioned The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie yet. It's a dark fantasy series that centers around a torturer, a self-centered aristocratic loser of an officer and a crazy berserker that's trying to set his life straight (as far as a crazy berserker can). It's totally awesome.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is a great book about some of the most evil people I've ever seen in fiction.
I picked that book up from a local bookshop for only £3. Brand new! I'm yet to start reading it though. Also, I really like your username.

OT: I'm currently reading Crime and Punishment and, although the protagonist isn't inherently evil, he does commit two murders at the start of the book. The novel is an exploration into how the guilt of his actions affects him mentally. I'm about 150 pages in and it's pretty good.

I second A Clockwork Orange too. The book and film are both pretty incredible.

Having just glimpsed it on my shelf, I'd also suggest Four Lions. It's about 4 "homegrown" would-be jihadists from Britain who are attempting to become serious suicide bombers. The characters are not so much evil...more misguided. It's definitely worth a watch, especially if you are a fan of Chris Morris.

Oh and I've just remembered a few more. Various novels by Chuck Palahiuk: Pgmy (although I think it's actually pretty terrible...you might like it), Rant (it's about a guy who goes around giving rabies to everyone), Haunted {All of the characters in that novel are pretty evil in one way or another. Such a good book).

Man these suggestions are really nice. I will definately have to keep looking at this thread for any more recommendations before I go buying a book to read.

I knew I spelt protagonist wrong (I am grateful for you pointing out the correct spelling)... It's one of those words I don't use often.

But anyways in response to your post, that kind of discussion is what I am looking for basically. When people can find a way to justify the villain's actions, or the idea of someone being evil as a grey area, and finding different perceptions of evil from different characters.

EDIT: I AM SO TIRED MY GRAMMAR AND SPELLING ARE GETTING WORSE AND WORSE.

Keep up the suggestions guys, but for now I need sleep.

I forgot the most obvious of the lot! Scrap everything that I suggested so far and read American Psycho. You can also go watch the film because it's pretty rad too. But the book has the most evil protagonist of anything I've ever encountered. In fact, screw everything else suggested in this thread because Patrick Bateman is one evil ************.

There's a scene in the book involving a starved rat, some brie, a rat-run and a woman nailed to the floor of a swanky apartment with her legs spread open. It's horrific.

Bret Easton Ellis may actually be the most evil author known to man lol.

Well of darkness. It's the first in a trilogy of fantasy books and the first book describes the villains of the next two books rise to power. Basically the princes whipping boy gets peer pressured by the prince into becoming his personal necromancer! (and that makes it sound much lamer than it is)

The half orcs by David Dalgish starts out like that too. It's about a pair of evil half Orc brothers, one a necromancer and one a warrior. The warrior eventually finds redemption though.

Light was not evil , he only killed hardened criminals , he even spared petty criminals . His intentions were as pure as it gets.

This , and kratos was awsome .

Filth by Irvine Welsh. It is about a corrupt Scottish detective and his yearly trip to Amsterdam. In the end, you somewhat feel sorry for him. Life did hand him shit, but at the same time it was no excuse to be the type of person he was. A good read, though, with some very interesting writing style (there are parts from the point of view of a tapeworm). Also, it was written by the same guy that wrote Trainspotting. You can't go wrong.

Excuse me? He killed the entire FBI squadron, was willing to kill the president, attempted to become dictator of the world, and killed hundreds of people. He used everyone around him, including his father, his girlfriend, and his friends, and on top of that he even killed his followers if he did not approve of what they did. Simply put, he was a villain.

Yeah, but most people given god like power, are corrupted no matter what good intentions they have. Light is a Grey protagonist or antihero.

Light was more so than most, look at Lelouche, he borders on insanity and villainry the entire show, but ends up resisting it. He is an anti hero, the fact is that Lelouche used questionable methods to improve the world, Light used questionable methods to benefit himself and become god, that is a by the books villain.

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. The book was written in order for the author to explore why people do some of the horrible things they do.
This. So many times this. I can't think of anymore that I've read that haven't been mentioned here. Maybe A Roadside Picnic? I'm pretty sure the main character in that was something of an antihero.

Shakespeare comes to mind.

Hamlet's protagonist was an anti-hero.

The protagonists in Macbeth and Richard III were villains. Very evil.

I believe Coriolanus's protagonist was an anti-hero, maybe a villain, can't remember for sure.

Check out any of the first three.

Those books are made of awesome. 'Best Served Cold' and 'The Heroes' (same author) were terrific as well.

That was in reference to the guy who mentioned 'The First Law' trilogy by Joe Abercrombie.

The Wasp Factory, Iain Banks (book).

It came out of nowhere, I randomly picked it up and found it hard to put down. Really, that kid made Damien of the Omen look like the cutest son of Satan ever in comparison.

I guess he was a lot like Kratos, killed a lot of bad people; but destroys a lot more than he makes right. Grey, man, just sad depressing grey
