Star Ocean: Till the end of time.

Not enough people play it, and it's absolutely awesome. Best battle system I have played with in an RPG.

Skies of arcadia
is a great game, and you should play that version over the Dreamcast version, if not for the extra features, then for the fact that the Dreamcast version has so many fricking random encounters it's hard to bloody move. In The GameCube version it was toned down a lot.

Tales of Symphonia
It's just so good and definitely recommended. It starts of cliche (which I actually could not give a crap about to be honest) but then it gets in to about 30 percent of the game and the story just goes nuts, also the fighting system is great and you can play with up to four people if you so wish.

KOTOR the original one - best RPG ever!
Well, it might be great, but it can't beat Mass Effect in my book.

Actually, it might be better to get the PC version, so that you'll have a complete game when Team Gizka finishes fixing the horribly broken ending.

Suikoden, Wild ARMs and Disgaea.
As much as I love Disgaea, I don't think it fits in with the RPG genre.
It's a turn-based strategy RPG. It counts.
Fair enough. My point is though, I think the OP is looking for more RPG's that are like Final Fantasy, which is why I wouldn't recommend Disgaea in this particular situation.

Earthbound and Mother 3.
Get them. NOW.
Earthbound Zero (Mother 1) is out there as well translated into English as a rom for play in an emulator. Earthbound (Mother 2) is great because it's just so zany. I haven't played Mother 3 yet, but if it's anything like the first two then it should be good.

How about:
SoulBlazer
Illusion of Gaia (Time, depending on where you are)
Terranigma
Secret of Mana
Legend of Mana
Star Tropics
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Shadowrun
The Legend of Zelda series
The Metroid series

I totally agree with the first comment. Golden Sun (and its sequel, The Lost Age) are probably some of the best RPGs ever made ever.
Also, In agreement with another previous one, Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia are good too (and by good I mean Symphonia is THE best and most moving game I have ever played). However, I can also recommend more of the Tales of games, such as Tales of the Abyss, which comes dangerously close to Symphonia in awesomeness (it's for the PS2), and Tales of Phantasia for the GBA, which I lost so I can't say too much good about it. Also, Tales of Destiny is supposed to be pretty good. I haven't played it, though.

All I can say is that while the Tales of series are pretty much some of the best games ever, under any circumstances DO NOT PLAY TALES OF LEGENDIA. That is a very important sentence so I'm going to repeat it. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PLAY TALES OF LEGENDIA.

Also, with more games from Namco, I also recommend Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (for the Gamecube). I quite liked it, though it's different battle system has been the subject of dispute.

Someone mentioned Star Ocean: Til the End Of Time. I would like to point out that, while it is a fantastic game and well worthy of recommendation (it's for the PS2, by the way), and the battle system is good, it is the most difficult game to level up in that I have ever seen. The battles take a long time and you don't get much experience from them, so make sure you fight a lot so you don't have to spend days tediously leveling up.

So many shots in the dark. For me to even start, I'd have to know what kind of RPG the OP enjoys.

Personae 4 is a good start. So, a sort of Tokyopop comic-book based game with good game mechanics and a Playstation 2 platform, eh?

Hmm, maybe something Dothack [http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/hack-series], or Steambot Chronicles [http://www.mobygames.com/game/ps2/steambot-chronicles]? Honestly, few games created with that Tokyopop vibe are ever released in the states, and the Personae series is among the best.

Unless they fix the nearly broken game along with that he's better off with the more stable Xbox version.

SRPG. Like FF:Tactics, Fire Emblem, and Shining Force. And all six are games I can heartily recommend.

Skies of Arcadia is fantastic, even though you'll probably have to bring a book. Random enemies are often easy enough that you can just tap the attack command repeatedly and win, occasionally letting off a special move if they're being stubborn, and you'll be wading through them. The event fights are a hell of a lot more exciting, though, so don't worry. Ship battles are lovely, for all their drawn-out cutscenes.

The Golden Sun games are also great. Really good battle system, with the Djinn giving special attacks and class changing, and the collectible summons in the sequel, and all kinds of good stuff. The plot is meh up to the second game, when it becomes substantially more interesting.

This is essentially a Bioware/Interplay love list, but if you want quality story, quality characters, quality gameplay, quality dialogue and sheer depth of choice these are *the best RPGS ever made*:

Fallout
Fallout 2
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadow of Amn
Planescape: Torment
Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal

After all my years of gaming I can't think of any RPG games besides the above that had a such an effect upon my personal development; the immersion of the story-lines combined with the wealth of moral choice available to the player gives the above games a literary quality that is rarely found in any video game.

Oh and FYI: Fallout 3 is nothing on FO1&2 in RPG terms. Bethesda came close, but fell well short in terms of dialogue and moral pathways. In my experience it is impossible to be anything other than super-good-messiah or mega-evil-bast*rd, and not particularly fulfilling to be either. Certainly not worth the 100/100 score on Gamespy, but a relatively good game nonetheless.

Mother 3 (GBA) is fantastic and I don't even like RPGs much. The combat system is awesome, turn-based but if you time successive presses with the beat of the music you get more hits that get stronger and stronger. If only other JRPGs had such an interactive battle system.

The fan-translation was completed not too long ago and you'll need to download the rom, apply the patch and use an emulator to play it (either on PC or a PSP running CFW). But it is well worth any effort you may have to go through to play. A different, extremely charming and interesting game. That fans went through the effort of translating the game in such a way so as to keep the charm of the game intact should tell you how good it is. The translation is excellent.

I'd suggest:

Oblivion if you don't want to see the sun for at least a year; it will take about that long to get through.

Mass Effect if you want something with more focused on story and shooting than the RPG elements (Avoid the PC version, which has SecuROM).

Lost Odyssey if you want something turn-based but don't want Final Fantasy.
