I'd recommend you to get this [http://www.amazon.co.uk/1001-Movies-You-Must-Before/dp/1844036901/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307794812&sr=8-1] book, It's where I go when I want suggestions for good classic movies.

Alternatively, if you're cheap, you can just check out the entire list here [http://www.listology.com/flogged/list/1001-movies-you-must-see-you-die]

So I've started watching a whole bunch of movies from the past that are just brilliant. None of that mediocre stuff that seems to litter the cinema every summer.
The best movies are the ones that stick around.

But I've run out of movies basically and as the title says I would like some suggestions :p
Preferably classics (but none of the obvious ones like Titanic or whatever, I'm more of a cult movie fan)
Here are some movies of the type I like I have recently watched and loved:

Scott Pilgrim VS The World
Love Exposure
High Fidelity
Being John Malkovich
From dusk till dawn
Machete

Much appreciated :)

Based on what you said I will endorse a great film (this is based on your enjoyment of Scott Pilgrim, High Fidelity and Being John Malkovich):

24 Hour Party People

Seriously a great movie (probably one of the ten best of last decade). Its based on a true story but purposefully distorts it to make it more interesting (it also tells you this at some points). Its both hilarious and fascinating.

Oh, the people who keep suggesting the Big Lebowski are also on the money. It will probably be right up your alley as well.

I recommend you to watch Dr Strangelove (parody on cold war and just very awesome movie), also you should try Clint Eastwood movies they are classic. Dollars Trilogy (A Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) contents the best westerns ever made.My favorite is Good, the Bad and the Ugly because it has the best duel scene ever(and also good plot, characters e.t.c.). If it counts like classic you can watch Evil dead trilogy. Also yo can watch 90s movie Six String Samurai it is kind of trashy post-apocaliptik movie but it very epic and entertaining. It is kind of hard to tell plot of the movie because it better not to hear but to watch. And of course try Chaplin's comedies Golden rush and Great dictator are the best.(one parodies golden rush, second parodies Gitler)
Of course exist a lot of other great movies but that all that i can remember.

I recommend the film "The Crow" starring Brandon Lee. Guy comes back from the grave to avenge his and his girlfriend death. Some excellent lines throughout the film and epic fights. It is my favorite film of all time.

I saw "Donny Darko" a while back. It's sort of a mind-fucking, "A Beautiful Mind"(great movie too) styled movie but with teenagers and a lot of stuff offensive to old people. :p

Good movie.

I also hear "A Clockwork Orange" is good, but I haven't seen that one. Only one scene where
some guy goes into a room with a guy lying beneath the sheets in a bed, staring at him and not responding, and when he pulled the sheets away his body was that of a sheep.

That was freaky.

If you haven't seen Citizen Kane, you should probably do that (It's one of those films you have to see). I don't think it's the best film of all time but it is damn good.

One flew over the cuckoo's nest. It's such an amazing film, I can not recommend it more.

I've recently gone on a binch of classic movies myself and heres a few I suggest:

Scarface (wonderful, heartbreaking, violent, tragic and yet funny, if in a dark humour ha, ha, way)
Batman (Jack Nicholson as the Joker, brilliant casting)
Clockwork Orange (because nothing says fun times like a bit of the old "singing in the rain")
There Will be Blood (cos it deserves all the praise it got)

Anything from Akira Kurisawa (Yojimbo, Forbidden fortress, Seven Samurai)
Some of the old school musicals, especially Singing in the rain.
And for a taste of George Lucas before he went loco, try American Graffiti.

Donnie Darko
The Breakfast Club
Silence of the Lambs
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Citizen Kane

Hmm....I think that's a good amount along with the others mentioned.

Hehe I unfortunately already found out that ending destroying any chance of me enjoying the movie. Still though, great concept.

Clerks is a bizarre little film really, it's definitely no "Dude Where's My Car" I'd say it's more surreal in a way and very character based. It's a film with endless dialogue and really dealing with the everyday trials and tribulations of the two main characters and their supporting cast. I don't really know how I'd classify it, but it's funny, it makes some good points and it's definitely a cult classic.

Edit: As the poster above me suggested Eternal Sunshine is a great movie and so is Spirited Away if you enjoy animé, in fact anything by Studio Ghibli is pretty great. If you're looking for something thought provoking and hard hitting go with Grave of the Fireflies, charming and beautiful - My Neighbour Totoro, all round brilliance - Spirited Away.
Ok yeah I'll definitely check it out. As for Eternal Sunshine, I loved that movie :)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. (best movie you've never heard of)

Rocky Horror Picture show (amazing this has not been mentioned yet!)

Lost Boys

Emperor's New Groove (the best Disney movie ever and yet somehow obscure)

Harvey (an actual 'classic' black and white movie)

Spirited Away
I remember the emperors new groove, I didn't pay attention to it when my friend put it on :/
Rocky horror.. well my parents swear by it but I'll have to be in a pretty weird mood to watch that, I'm sure it's great though :)

I'm getting the impression a lot of people are suggesting Eternal Sunshine because of the Being John Malkovich reference, I've already seen it and I would totally agree with that comparison. Both crazy movies :p

The Shawshank Redempion is still one of my favourite movies. I'd also recommend Alien/ Aliens, if you're into Sci-fi.
A few more : Pulp Fiction, Fight Club and 12 Monkeys.
