Most of what Alfred Hitchcock did when his movies went color is great. Rear Window is my favorite, North By Northwest is the easiest of his to watch, Psycho actually lives up to the hype, and Rope is quite possibly the best suspense movie ever made.
The original King Kong holds up pretty well. I have yet to see a bad Marx Brothers film; Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera are classics. From the Silent Era The General is very good. Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Metropolis are good but you have to be in the right mood for them. Same goes for a latter film The Man Who Came to Dinner.
I can also recommend Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Night of the Creeps, and Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein.
Two French films that come to mind are Nikkita and Imposture. They are both rather weird and dark, especially Imposture but they are interesting. For an American weird but interesting film try Dark City.
