I'd recommend Company of heroes and Supreme commander(The original or it's expansion but not the second game since it's not as good), both fun RTS games. For RPGs I'd say give Mount and blade: Warband a try or Vampire: Masquerades bloodlines.

Also Dawn of War, it still remains my favorite RTS to this day and the multiplayer is very good, it's extremely well balanced.

Company of Heroes and Dawn of War spring to mind. Relic has a thing for making incredibly fun RTS games with insanely imbalanced multiplayer that still manages to be fair.
I wouldn't call necrons in DoW:DC balanced or fair :p
But I still recommend dawn of war and its expansions, the single player is a ton of fun.
It's true that an army that can't actully die does have it's advantages, but there are way's to fight them, for example

Problem is, by then they have dozens of elite units that are insanely difficult to kill, nothing can beat necrons late in the game. You just have to rush them with shitty units at the start, which isn't fun :(

I recommedn anything it the "total war" series ROME total war specifically all they are all good in my opinion its kinda old but will still kill alot of time if you get into it. Dawn of war was another good one too. Or if you wanta an RPG/RTS (kinda rts anyway) Record of aragest war is another good one (If you like your animes)

RTS
The age of empire series
the dawn of war series (maybe except soulstorm)
sins of a solar empire
civilization 2 or 5 (note this is a turn based rts still great though)
starcraft and warcraft series
star wars empire at war and expansion
company of heroes series
command & conquer red alert series
supreme commander series (though as it has already been said Supreme Commander 2 isn't as good as the original/expansion)
universe at war: Earth assault

(special mention to plants and zombies since it also uses strategi but does fall into the category of casual games)

RPG

persona 4
kingdom hearts 1 and 2

This. Dawn of War can provide great fun by just by doing 4v4 team battles with AI and that's what kept me playing.

I recommend Age Of Mythology.
I picked that game up from the dust bin because I remembered having a blast with it. Couldn't play it anymore... It sucked too much.
You think so? What's wrong with it? People still play the original starcraft, and it has a lot of problems
Like I said I had a blast with it when it first came out. But now I was so bored with it. Building your base is a painful slow process. Too slow imho. Same for the units. Every mission, 90% is building your base + units. 10% is actually doing stuff. It just didn't do it for me anymore. Don't care about the graphics if that's what you're thinking. The game play just feels sooooooooo f'ing outdated.

You do make a valid point about starcraft 1 though. I find it strange that I can enjoy that game but not AoM. There must be an essential difference that I can't quite put my finger on. I feel more invested in the mission in starcraft but I don't know why.

Oh god, yeah that's a huge problem. I played a 2 hour game once

TWO HOURS @_@
On time I got to the 2 H 20 minute mark and just quit, because we were nowhere near winning and neither were they. Some of the maps are just stupid hard to win on, for both you and the enemy.

I think starcraft is a better designed game though. I just started playing it an and having a ton of fun, although I do like AoM about as much. I think if S1 was as polished, I would like it more, which is why I really want starcraft 2 :/ looks like everything I want out of an RTS.
